Prep football preview: Mount Horeb/Barneveld's Malik Winston runs with winning ways, on and off the field

{{featured_button_text}}

Prep football photo: Mount Horeb/Barneveld's Malik Winston

DAVE LUBACH For the State Journal

During his last football coaching stop, at Delavan-Darien, new Mount Horeb/Barneveld coach Bret St. Arnauld got a first-hand look at the Vikings' program.

"We played Mount Horeb a couple of years ago, and I knew they had some pretty good athletes," he said. "So when the opportunity arose to take the job, I jumped at it and thought it would be a good opportunity for me."

Then, he popped in a tape of senior running back Malik Winston. And his optimism about the program was confirmed.

"You find out you have an all-state running back and you do some research on him and you realize he's the real deal," St. Arnauld said.

Winston rose to prominence for the Vikings as a junior, finishing with 1, yards and 27 touchdowns as Mount Horeb went overall and finished second in the Badger North behind WIAA Division 2 state champion Waunakee.

He rushed for more than yards three times — including a carry, yard, three-touchdown performance against Oregon in Week 2.

The state — and, more importantly, college coaches — took notice. The 5-foot, pounder is ranked the fifth-best prep running back in the state by WisSports. And the recruiting attention is pouring in.

St. Arnauld said the University of Wisconsin is among the Power 5 teams showing interest in Winston, who is drawing heavy interest from other schools such as North Dakota State, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa and Illinois State.

The soft-spoken Winston is flattered by the attention, but it wasn't his top priority as practice started last week.

"My focus is on the last year of football. Whatever options are available then, I'll take the best option for myself," he said.

If you listen to St. Arnaud, those options are likely to grow as the season goes on.

"He's among the top three that I've seen," said St. Arnauld, whose history also includes a coaching stop in Michigan. "He's got perfect footwork and vision. He's got it all down."

For all the praise that Winston receives for his abilities on the field, he is lauded even more for how he behaves off it.

During his time getting to know his star player, St. Arnauld learned that Winston shines as an individual as well.

"He's very humble," St. Arnauld said. "You would never have any idea that he is who he is off the field. He's always willing to help everyone else, willing to put his teammates before himself."

Winston serves as a mentor for younger students at Mount Horeb, helping them acclimate themselves to the high school scene.

"I've always done a lot of volunteer work with the basketball and football teams," he said. "Our coaches always get us involved in stuff. I just like helping people."

Put it all together, and St. Arnauld is excited for the opportunity to watch Winston in action on and off the field in his debut at the school — which figures to be in the mix in the Badger North race yet again.

"These are the things you look for as a coach. Because he can be a great talent, but what kind of person can he be off the field, because that's how you find out what kind of husband or father they can be," St. Arnauld said.

"Malik is already a great young man. He does those things you want your kids doing."

OLIVE AND POPEYE

Regular readers will know that before this incarnation of my blog &#; hosted by the estimable Gwilym ab Ioan &#; I had a blog with Google that ran for a few years until December Then it was pulled for no obvious reason, though Google suggested that I was a spammer, which was palpable nonsense.

I always suspected that someone made a complaint. (However difficult that might be to believe!)

Perhaps because, in that last month, I had a quite bitter exchange with a rather odd woman based in Swansea; her name was Denise Acton Kingsley and her hope for riches was called the Olive Trust, a weird outfit dealing in alternative therapies and treatments. Joss sticks and incantations as far as I could make out.

If you really want to, you can get something of the flavour of the exchange from reading I Will Have My Say.

Acton Kingsley was yet another of those oddball, middle class Englishwomen who have flooded into Wales since devolution was introduced. True to form she cwtched up to the Labour Party &#; in the form of long-serving Swansea councillor Alan Lloyd OBE, Lord Mayor , and now Alderman &#; before whacking in her application for funding.

Again, sticking to the template we see across Wales, she found herself &#; or hoped to find &#; an old building and asked the Wales European Funding Office (WEFO) for a cool one million pounds to turn it into a &#;community building&#;. (Well, it&#;s a nice round figure.)

As someone pointed out, &#;community&#; and &#;communities&#; appears 14 times in the screen grab you see above, and that&#;s no accident, for these are magic words which initiates know as the keys to untold wealth. Throw in &#;minority&#; or &#;minorities&#; and you can hit the jackpot.

I&#;m not sure if this application was successful. I&#;d like to think it was laughed off, as it should have been, but the WEFO Online site is currently offline, so I can&#;t check.

Anyway, after I started the new blog I forgot about Denise Acton Kingsley and her Olive Trust until someone referred me to a piece in Llanelli Online telling us she has resurfaced, across the mighty Llwchwr, in Cydweli, but with the ageing Alderman still in tow to open doors for her.

Now, it appears, she is an expert in &#;equality training&#;, obviously cashing in on the Equality Act

According to the Llanelli Online article by Alan Evans the &#;Olive Trust was set up in &#;. But we know different, don&#;t we, boys and girls, because the WEFO application was submitted in July

What&#;s more, the Olive Trust may go back even further. Checking the Charity Commission website turned up this reference to an Olive Trust based in Gloucestershire until , when it was &#;Removed &#; REGISTERED IN ERROR&#;.

Given that this outfit was involved with &#;natural therapies&#; it&#;s reasonable to assume that it&#;s the same Olive Trust that washed up in Swansea and is now plying its dubious trade out of Kidwelly.

The new venture is Olive Training (though the name seems to change from page to page on the website). And reading it causes me to worry for the good people of Carmarthenshire. Turning to the &#;About the CEO&#; page (which doesn&#;t give the CEO&#;s name!) brings up the panel below. How can anyone claiming to be so well educated have written that first line?

She also writes of &#;our team&#; . . . which is presumably her and Alan Lloyd, the latter described in the Llanelli Online piece as the Chair. The gem above says that Olive Training is the &#;business arm&#; . . . of the Olive Trust? I ask because the Olive Trust is nowhere mentioned on the website, but is the only entity mentioned in the Llanelli Online report.

But on the plus side, if you go to the &#;Store&#; page you can &#;Ask an equality question&#; &#; for £3! Bloody hell! this is money for old rope &#; I can offer a service like that. I can see the questions now: &#;Dear Jac, Do you think Labour is doing a good job running Wales?&#;, or, &#;Dear Jac, Do you have views on the third sector in Wales?&#;.

I have searched and searched, but have been unable to find anything on the Charity Commission website or the Companies House website for the Olive Trust, Olive Training, Olive Training , etc., etc. Which suggests to me that this outfit, whatever it might be called, has no official existence.

That being so, and given that Denise Acton Kingsley is clearly lacking in the small, brightly-coloured round things we boys flicked with our thumbs along the gutters of Brynhyfryd and Manselton, I shall certainly revisit the Olive Trust if I hear that any public money has reached the unlikely pairing of Denise and Al.

STAYING IN CARMARTHENSHIRE . . .

As if the Odd Couple weren&#;t bounty enough for Sir Gâr I hear of more third sector mentors putting in an appearance, this time we are being saved from the darker angels of our nature by Gerli Orumaa and Rosie Leach.

Now you&#;re looking blankly at the screen and wondering, &#;Who the f . . . . . ?&#; So let me tell you.

Gerli is an Estonian, living in Swansea, and she&#;s the Regional Coordinator in Central South Wales for the Ethnic Minorities & Youth Support Team Wales (EYST); while Englishwoman Rosie is based in Cardiff and works for the Welsh Refugee Council (which, despite the name, is not a body helping Welsh refugees).

Unusually, perhaps, for a woman in this area of activity, Gerli has three children.

Gerli Orumaa and Rosie Leach are organising a focus group in The Hub, Llanelli on Monday the 12th. I don&#;t know much about Orumaa beyond the fact that she&#;s involved in the &#;diversity&#; industry and has some connection with Swansea University.

Rosie Leach on the other hand provides plenty of information in her Linkedin profile and it&#;s a fascinating read. She was educated at private schools in Somerset before going up to Oxford where she read Philosophy, Politics and Economics, getting a in the Oxford degree that runs Britain.

Her first job in Wales seems to have been as an Oral History Researcher at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris from December to March (Though of course that would not have been local oral history.)

She went back to England before returning to do 4 months as a research assistant at Cardiff University in the early part of , then back to England before flitting in again to do 4 months in as a researcher at Bangor. This was somehow fitted around a two-year stint as a Money Advice Caseworker with Advice Mid Wales. Since June she has been Refugee Week Wales Coordinator for the Welsh Refugee Council.

Theatre is obviously Rosie Leach&#;s &#;thing&#;, but her background tells us so much about modern Wales.

Here we have yet another highly-educated middle class Englishwoman involving herself with the Labour-controlled third sector (often with a university connection thrown in), which then results in her and others like her touring our land educating us in how to behave towards fellow human beings &#; as if we Welsh are in dire need of such lecturing! What is the real message here?

And who are the minorities?

In the case of Naz Malik of Awema fame, Rose Mutale Nyoni Merrill of Bawso, and the Board of Community Health Councils, plus various others, the minority benefitting often extends little further than their family and cronies, most of whom seem to be recent arrivals. So they tend to be self-perpetuating and very self-serving minorities.

By comparison, what of the Chinese, who work hard, keep to the law, and rarely if ever trouble the public purse? The same perhaps could be said of Jews, Sikhs, and to some extent Hindus. Which means that the minorities dominating the third sector in Wales are of African and / or Muslim background.

And why, apart from Gerli Orumaa do we see so few European minorities represented in the third sector when we have so many of them in Wales now, especially the Poles? And what of the long-established Italian community of the south &#; did they ever demand a constant drip-feed of public funding?

And if we&#;re talking of minorities, what about those areas of Wales where we Welsh are in a minority, such as the coastal strip between Mawddach and Dyfi? I belong to this minority, so can I demand my wodge? Of course not.

Because it&#;s not really about minorities, or about respect, or dignity; it&#;s all about serving &#;Welsh&#; Labour&#;s agenda in suggesting that racism is rampant in Wales due &#; nudge, nudge &#; to &#;nationalism&#;.

It a publicly-funded propaganda exercise.

MEANWHILE, ACROSS THE MIGHTY LLWCHWR . . .

News has also reached me concerning Beverly Garside, of whom I wrote last month in &#;Move to Wales &#; Plenty of funding, no questions asked&#;. Garside is a former animal rights activist who mixed with some pretty hairy characters before removing herself to Wales and starting a new life . . . in the sector between second and fourth.

My source, reliable thus far, now tells me that it&#;s all falling apart, writing, &#;Occupation of The Feelgood Factory, Bryncynon, by the Empower SVS/Garside empire has been terminated as of this coming weekend. Desertion by Staff or the recent exposé(s) may be the reason.&#;

But it&#;s what my source says next that really concerns me.

&#;Empower/Garside however may be seeking forgiveness for Sins past and present &#; rumour is that it/she has been engaged to overcome the legal problems faced by storycall.us following a period of failure to pay minimum wage.

£60, underpayed (sic) is rumoured to be the claim.

Those responsible for management of The Tabernacle are also Trustees of other Charities that receive Council and Government support and funding. The Morriston Tabernacle building itself is Grade 1 listed and has been beautifully (and expensively) restored&#;&#;with funding from where?

It takes dedication in all weathers to hand out Pink flip flops in Wine Street, Swansea on a Saturday night (grant funded?) It takes competence to act as a Manager and/or Trustee and to properly administer public and charity funds.&#;

Not only does it concern me, it also confuses me.

Let&#;s start with Morriston Tabernacle / Tabernacl Treforys&#;The largest, grandest and most expensive chapel built in Wales&#;. My source talks of legal problems due to underpaying, presumably of staff, but Morriston Tabernacle is an unlikely rogue employer. Come to that, how many employees would it have?

The source then says that those responsible are also &#;Trustees of other charities&#;. But looking at the three charities connected with the chapel &#; , and &#; I can only find one trustee who is also a trustee of another charity, and that one is very small.

Then there&#;s the reference to &#;Wine Street, Swansea&#;. While some may be pronounce it like that, it&#;s in fact spelled Wind (and probably derived from wynd). Though where the hell the pink flip-flops fit I have no idea.

If there is a link between Garside and Morriston Tabernacle, then the question has to be, Who recommended this woman to Tabernacle, and why?

So, Source, please get back with clarification.

♦ end ♦

UPDATE Thanks to a phone call out of the blue I may now have made the hitherto unfathomable connection between Garside and Morriston Tabernacle.

The minister at Tabernacle is Reverend Jill Hailey Skeel Harries and she also serves as a trustee on the board of the Union of Welsh Independents, Charity number More importantly for our purposes, Reverend Harries is also involved with Carmarthenshire Domestic Abuse Services Ltd (previously Carmarthen Women&#;s Aid) which, as my source suggested, receives &#;public and charity funding&#;.

Given that Garside is also involved with domestic abuse, having been a director of Cyfannol Women&#;s Aid Ltd, of Pontypool, it&#;s entirely reasonable to assume that if they didn&#;t already know each other then contact was made through a mutual acquaintance, unless of course Garside has been recruited by the Union of Welsh Independents.

Without Zayn Malik, One Direction become four goofy white guys shouting

I’m a fan of One Direction’s music. It’s very efficient pop music that doubles as ecstatic, funny, and emotionally complex arena rock. Becoming a fan of One Direction’s music has inadvertently and perhaps inevitably drawn my focus toward the individual members of the band, my favourite of which was initially Zayn Malik, who has now left them in order to live the life of a “normal year-old”.

Malik’s function in the band was in some ways obscure or invisible. He didn’t write for the band often, and when he did he usually appeared among a galaxy of co-writers on the group’s most gelatinous ballads (Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne are responsible for the majority of the group’s internal songwriting). His modesty and the economy of his expression gave him the reputation of the “quiet one” and the “mysterious one” among the boy band taxonomies. In the One Direction documentary, This Is Us, he features minimally compared to the rest of the group; when the band takes a break from their aggressive and interminable touring schedule, Malik is depicted in isolation, in a room he’s decorated entirely with graffiti. In another scene, he streams by the camera on a Segway. His smile seems to materialise slowly and almost imperceptibly across his face, composing itself atom by atom.

He’s also frankly gorgeous, all sculpted, glossy angles. When I look at the structure of his face I am reminded of a geometric prism, or the interior of a geode. These features were identifiable even early in their careers when the other four members appeared to be one elastic teenage face. His hair is also shapely, shimmering and kind of incandescently dark, as if permanently enhanced by a follow spot. Its styling never quite collapsed into the strange vertical animals emerging from the skulls of Tomlinson or Niall Horan. An enduring image of One Direction is of Malik in the Night Changes video, the soft and intricate cascade of his hair merging with a dense knot of spaghetti.

He was one of the more accomplished vocalists of the group, exhibiting the widest range. He mostly inhabited a silvery, full-bodied tenor, similar to but more sharp and precise than Harry Styles’ smoky warble. At one point in This Is Us, while on tour, he is extracted from sleep by songwriter/producer Julian Bunetta to record the bridge of Best Song Ever, into which Malik compressed a tenor and falsetto vocal. His solos, especially on the ballad You & I, could be dazzling, his voice moving with grace through impressive aerial designs, and he contributed body and dimension to the group’s choruses.

In most One Direction choruses, five voices of varying integrity collapse into a single, compact chord. It’s an arena rock aesthetic, treating harmonies as if they’re a system of collapsing stars; it gives the condensing voices a kind of internal velocity. It also makes One Direction songs near-impossible to simulate at karaoke without profound breath and pitch control. (I’ve tried. A lot.) I think this is the source of a lot of their appeal; their voices and the instrumentation, which is usually minimal guitar figures against fluorescent banks of synths, cause their songs feel like a form of glam rock that’s rushing at you in three dimensions.

The remaining members of One Direction have only performed a few concerts without Malik, so it’s hard to determine if his subtraction from the group creates an imbalance in the harmonic attack. But he leaves a void of personality, a void of vocal agility. Without him the group loses some of its distinctiveness and slowly morphs into four goofy white guys shouting. Regardless, in a video from their concert last night, after the bridge of You & I, Harry, Louis, Liam, and Niall stopped singing. The audience delivered Zayn’s solo.

At one point in This Is Us, while on tour, he is extracted from sleep by songwriter/producer Julian Bunetta to record the bridge of Best Song Ever, into which Malik compressed a tenor and falsetto vocal. His solos, especially on the ballad You & I, could be dazzling, his voice moving with grace through impressive aerial designs, and he contributed body and MAC Archives - Malik Softs to the group’s choruses.

In most One Direction choruses, five voices of varying integrity MAC Archives - Malik Softs into a single, compact chord.

Artistry

One Direction's debut studio album, Up All Night (), is predominantly a pop music record, containing elements of teen pop, dance-pop, pop rock, with electropop and rock influences.[][][][]Digital Spy's Robert Copsey described the album as a "collection of PG pop rock with killer choruses",[] while The New York Times considered it "full of easy rock-inflected pop, blithe and sometimes clever".[] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard acknowledged that the album demonstrates an originality in sound that was "necessary for the revitalization of the boy MAC Archives - Malik Softs movement".[] The songs "One Thing" and "What Makes You Beautiful" were particularly noted for the genres of power pop and pop rock, for their "powerhouse" guitar riffs and "forceful" choruses.[][][][]

Their second studio album, Take Me Home (), is characterised by rock-inherited pop, prominent electric guitar riffs, bright synthesisers, a homogeneous sound and Category: Backup Tool, and the pitch-correcting software Auto-Tune.[94][95][96][][]Alexis Petridis of The Guardian interpreted its signature sound as a "peppy, synth-bolstered take on earlys new-wave pop, heavy on clipped rhythms and chugging guitars", which, he said, is at least an improvement on the substitute contemporary R&B "that was once the grim lot of the boyband".[95] Jon Caramanica, writing in The New York Times, considered the album "far more mechanical" than their debut album, although noted that it is sonically and lyrically similar.[94] The album's lyricism speaks of falling in love, unrequited love, the insistence that flaws are what make a person unique, commitment, jealousy and longing for past significant others.[94][95][96][]

Erica Futterman for Rolling Stone favoured their live acoustic performances as both showing, "Horan's ability to play guitar, as well as One Direction's admirable live vocals, MAC Archives - Malik Softs. There was no need to worry about a backing track or a bum note, a pleasant realization at a pop show."[]Herald Sun's Cameron Adams opined that One Direction have "strong pop voices".[] Melody Lau of the National Post wrote, "It's easy to get lost in inherent appeal of their perfectly coiffed dos and almost-too-put-together preppy style but somewhere in the midst of all the love-struck squeals of teenage girls are guys who can actually sing and, to a certain extent, entertain."[] Jane Stevenson of the portal site Canoe concurred: "What I didn't really prepare myself for was that they all can actually sing in concert."[] Chris Richards, writing in The Washington Post, dissented from the approval: "As the five traded couplets, it was tough to imagine a future Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin or Bobby Brown emerging from the pack. No one voice stood out."[] Mike Wass of Idolator felt One Direction's "surprisingly accomplished effort" of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" proved that One Direction are "more than capable" of evolving their sound.[]

Their third album Midnight Memories () is a pop rock record, a slight departure from the band's original teen pop sound. Liam Payne called Midnight Memories a "slightly rockier and edgier" album than their previous material. The album is heavily influenced by 80's rock[] and folk music and briefly integrates elements of dubstep, notably in "Little White Lies". The album's lyrical themes primarily revolve around love, heartbreak and sexual intercourse. Many critics praised its lyrical depth and musical composition, as well as the group's level of involvement in the production process.[]

Their fourth album Four () was released on 17 November Payne once again claimed that the album would be "edgier" and that the group had written most of the songs for it; Horan came up with the name of the album, commemorating the fact that it is One Direction's fourth record to date and that it has been four years since the band's formation. Signifying a further maturation of their pop sound, the album's first single, "Steal My Girl", was dubbed by Billboard as "no What Makes You Beautiful, but its Coldplay-like piano pop could be a good direction",[] and that the band was "not entirely ready to let go of its bubble-gum days". Rolling Stone described the record as "saturated with retro vibes"; its songs "split the difference between big, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, splashy Eighties pop rock and more elegant Seventies flavours – a very pesky whipper-snapper move that's not so far from what Haim's hit "Days Are Gone" did last year".[]

One Direction greet Swedish fans in Stockholm, May

During the mids, One Direction were dubbed as teen idols,[6] and were often subject to fan hysteria.[7][][] Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph, in an article on One Direction's success in North America, notes that Americans had left a gap in the market and it took the prominence of Justin Bieber to demonstrate that there still was a market for "clean cut, wholesome, whiter-than-white, middle class parent friendly pop: cute boys advocating puppy love. And what could be better than one cute boy, if not five?"[] Bill Werde, a representative of Billboard magazine, commented, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, "There's a lot of possibility here, there's a lot of upside, that level of talent with those kinds of looks, it's really a perfect storm for a massive, massive successful phenomenon."[] In NPR, Maria Sherman noticed that before One Direction's breakthrough, boy bands were "off the radar" since NSYNC went on an indefinite hiatus in []

Horan commented on One Direction as a boy band, "People think that a boy band is air-grabs and [being] dressed in all one colour. We're boys in a band. We're trying to do something different from what people would think is the typical kind of boy band. We're trying to do different kinds of music and we're just trying to be ourselves, not squeaky clean."[] Leah Collins, writing for the National Post, remarked they had succeeded on the latter front. "For the most part, that just means the group presents themselves as typical, goofy and uncensored teenage boys&#;– posting jokey YouTube videos, for instance, or boozing at awards shows."[] Writing for The Observer, Kitty Empire opined, "One Direction fulfill a great many boy band prerequisites (looks, soppy lyrics, tune-grasp, fame-lust) but their lack of routines points to the subtle digressions afoot here".[] Each member's individual identity is reinforced by their intentionally different personal styles. Caroline Watson, the band's original stylist, spoke about styling the band, "At the beginning I didn't want them all in black or all in leather&#;– that whole stereotypical boy band thing." Instead, her original idea was for them to be the "male equivalent to MAC Archives - Malik Softs Spice Girls", with each member being a part of the group but still having his own individual style.[]

Legacy

One Direction were described as sparking a resurgence in the interest in boy bands MAC Archives - Malik Softs well as forming part of a new "British Invasion" (along with acts like Adele) in the United States.[][][][][][]NPR described the group as "one of the biggest boy bands the world had ever seen"[] and the group has been described as "the world's biggest boy band" as recently as []Rolling Stone named "What Makes MAC Archives - Malik Softs Beautiful" the sixth greatest boy band song of all time.[]Billboard named Four the best boy band album of the last thirty years, calling it "the absolute standard-bearer for the last decade of pop".[] One Direction's music was considered pop that was rooted in guitar rock which was rare during their active years, with Rolling Stone calling the group "one of the great rock bands of the 21st century."[]

One Direction's rise to fame has been called "meteoric" with the group becoming the first British band to ever have MAC Archives - Malik Softs debut album top the US charts.[] During their continued rise in the United States inthe mania surrounding the group was dubbed "One Direction Infection."[] That same year, "1D World" stores were opened around the United States as the group worked on their second studio album to meet the high demand for the band and "to give fans the ultimate One Direction experience."[] Part of the group's rise to popularity was their "atypical construct" in the sense that they don't dance, rarely wear matching outfits, and are heavily tattooed, all three which were rare in boybands of the past.[] They were credited with breaking "the boy band mold."[] Despite their differences in that regard, the group still used an approach pioneered by The Beatles in which each member was applied a persona; Horan as "the cute Irish one", Malik as "the quiet and mysterious one", Payne as "the mature and sensible one", Styles as "the charming flirt" and Tomlinson as "the funny and irresponsible one".[]

One Direction are also widely considered to have been one of the first groups and celebrities to have been propelled to global recognition by social media.[1][2][3] Sonny Takhar, the chief executive officer of Syco Records, attributes the breakthrough to the power of social media. "Sometimes you feel the song's the star, but it's not like that here&#;– it's the act," he said. "It's a real moment. Social media has become the new radio, it's never broken an act globally like this before."[] Will Bloomfield, the group's manager, added, "These guys live online, and so do their fans."[] Their management employs a social media team and the members all tweet themselves, "which helps create the illusion that they couldn't be any closer to their fans", according to Caspar Llewellyn Smith, writing for The Guardian.[] Sunil Singhvi, Twitter head of entertainment in the UK, stated that "the fans' ability, via Twitter, to tell Europeans about One Direction really catapulted them there, then from Europe to America, and now it's a global phenomenon."[] One Direction's Twitter account had amassed ten million followers by Februarywith the account gaining followers at an average of 21, per day.[] Their rise in success has been greatly credited due to social media, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, which allowed fans to not only spread the word about the group, but get live updates from concerts and interviews as well as about the band's whereabouts daily.[] One Direction, in their active years, were extremely present on social media and interacted with fans daily, giving them "an army of online fans."[]The Detroit News named them "the first megastar boyband of the Social Media Era."[]

I always suspected that someone MAC Archives - Malik Softs a complaint.

True to form she cwtched up to the Labour Party &#; in the form of long-serving Swansea councillor Alan Lloyd OBE, Lord Mayorand now Alderman &#; before whacking in her application for funding.

Again, sticking to the template we see across Wales, she found herself &#; or hoped to find &#; an old building and asked the Wales European Funding Office (WEFO) for a cool one million pounds to turn it into a &#;community building&#.

According to the Llanelli Online article by Alan Evans the &#;Olive Trust was set up in &#. But we know different, don&#;t we, boys and girls, because the WEFO application was submitted in July

What&#;s more, the Olive Trust may go back even further. Checking the Charity Commission website turned up this reference to an Olive Trust based in Gloucestershire untilwhen it was &#;Removed &#; REGISTERED IN ERROR&#;.

She also writes of &#;our team&#;. . which is presumably her and Alan Lloyd, the latter described in the Llanelli Online piece as the Chair. The gem above says that Olive Training is the &#;business arm&#;. . of the Olive Trust? I ask because the Olive Trust is nowhere mentioned on the website, but is the only entity mentioned in the Llanelli Online report.

But on the plus side, if you go to the &#;Store&#; page you can &#;Ask an equality question&#; &#; for £3! Bloody hell! this is money for old rope &#; I can offer a service like that. I can see the questions now: &#;Dear Jac, Do you think Labour is doing a good job running Wales?&#;, or, &#;Dear Jac, Do you have views on the third sector in Wales?&#.

I have searched and searched, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, but have been unable to find anything on the Charity Commission website or the Companies House website for the Olive Trust, Olive Training, Olive Trainingetc., etc.

STAYING IN CARMARTHENSHIRE. . .

As if the Odd Couple weren&#;t bounty enough for Sir Gâr I hear of more third sector mentors putting in an appearance, this time we are being saved from the darker angels of our nature by Gerli Orumaa and Rosie Leach.

Now you&#;re looking blankly at the screen and wondering, &#;Who the f. ?&#; So let me tell you.

Gerli is an Estonian, living in Swansea, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, and she&#;s the Regional Coordinator in Central South Wales for the Ethnic Minorities & Windows 7 Home Premium 32-Bit crack serial keygen Support Team Wales (EYST); while Englishwoman Rosie is based in Ultra Lingua English-German 4.4.1 crack serial keygen and works for the Welsh Refugee Council (which, despite the name, is not a body helping Welsh refugees).

She went back to England before returning to do 4 months as a research assistant at Cardiff University in the early part ofthen back to England before flitting in again to do 4 months in as a researcher at Bangor. This was somehow fitted around a two-year stint as a Money Advice Caseworker with Advice Mid Wales. Since MAC Archives - Malik Softs she has been Refugee Week Wales Coordinator for the Welsh Refugee Council.

And why, apart from Gerli SpyHunter 5.10.7 Crack With Serial Key [Email & Password] Free Download do we see so few European minorities represented in the third sector when we have so many of them in Wales now, especially the Poles? Parallels Desktop 17 Crack & License Key [2021] what of the long-established Italian community of the south &#; did they ever demand a constant drip-feed of public funding?

And if we&#;re talking of minorities, what about those areas of Wales MAC Archives - Malik Softs we Welsh are in a minority, such as the coastal strip between Mawddach and Dyfi? I belong to this minority, so can I demand my wodge? Of course not.

Because it&#;s not really about minorities, or about respect, or dignity; it&#;s all about serving &#;Welsh&#; Labour&#;s agenda in suggesting that racism is rampant in Wales due &#; nudge, nudge &#; to &#;nationalism&#.

It a publicly-funded propaganda exercise.

MEANWHILE, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, ACROSS THE MIGHTY LLWCHWR. . .

News has also reached me concerning Beverly Garside, of whom I wrote last month in &#;Move to Wales &#; Plenty of funding, no questions asked&#. Garside is a former animal rights activist who mixed with some pretty hairy characters before removing herself to Wales and starting a new life. . in the sector between second and fourth.

My source, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, reliable thus far, now tells me that it&#;s all falling apart, writing, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, &#;Occupation of The Feelgood Factory, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, Bryncynon, by the Empower SVS/Garside empire has been terminated as of this coming weekend. Desertion by Staff or the recent exposé(s) may be the reason.&#;

It takes dedication in all weathers to hand out Pink flip flops in Wine Street, Swansea on a Saturday night (grant funded?) It takes competence to act as a Manager and/or Trustee and to properly administer public and charity funds.&#;

Not only does it concern me, MAC Archives - Malik Softs, it also confuses me.

Let&#;s start with Morriston Tabernacle / Tabernacl Treforys&#;The largest, grandest and most expensive chapel built in Wales&#. My source talks of legal problems due to underpaying, presumably of staff, but Morriston Tabernacle is an unlikely rogue employer. Come to that, how many employees would it have?

The source then says that those responsible are also &#;Trustees of other charities&#;. But looking at the three charities connected with the chapel &#;and &#; I can only find one trustee who is also a trustee of another charity, and that one is very small.

Then there&#;s the reference to &#;Wine Street, Swansea&#;. While some may be pronounce it like that, it&#;s in fact spelled Wind (and probably derived from wynd). Though where the hell the pink flip-flops fit I have no idea.

If there is a link between Garside and Morriston Tabernacle, then the question has MAC Archives - Malik Softs be, Who recommended this woman to Tabernacle, and why?

Prep football preview: Mount Horeb/Barneveld's Malik Winston runs with winning ways, on and off the field

One Direction

English-Irish boy band

Not to be confused with One-way.

For the Dan + Shay song, see Good Things (Dan + Shay album).

One Direction, often shortened to 1D, are an English-Irish popboy band formed in London, England in The group are composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson; former member Zayn Malik left the group in March The group signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after forming and finishing third in the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor in

Propelled to global success by social media,[1][2][3] One Direction's five albums, Up All Night (), Take Me Home (), Midnight Memories (), Four (), and Made in the A.M. (), topped charts in several countries, and generated hit singles including "What Makes You Beautiful" (their first number one on the UK Singles Chart, and the highest debut for a British act on the US Billboard Hot since ), "Live While We're Young", "Best Song Ever", "Story of My Life" and "Drag Me Down". After the release of Four, One Direction became the first band in the US Billboard history to have their first four albums debut at number one.[4] Their third album, Midnight Memories, was the best-selling album worldwide of [5]

Considered teen idols, One Direction were often subject to fan hysteria.[6][7] They embarked on four world tours, two of which were all-stadium. The band's Where We Are Tour, in support of Midnight Memories, was the highest-grossing concert tour in , the highest-grossing tour by a vocal group in history, and the 15th highest-grossing concert tour of all time, grossing $ million (unadjusted for inflation).[8] The band went on hiatus in January , allowing all members to pursue other projects.[9][10]

As of , the band have sold a total of 70 million records worldwide,[11] making them one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.[12] The band have won nearly awards, including seven Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards (including Artist of the Year in and ), and 28 Teen Choice Awards. In , they earned an estimated $75 million, becoming the second highest earning celebrity under 30 according to Forbes.[13] As the world's best-selling artist of , the group was named the Global Recording Artist of the Year by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.[14] In , Billboard named the band "Artist of the Year".[15][16]Forbes ranked them as the fourth highest-earning celebrities in the world in ,[17] and subsequently in second in [18]

History

The X Factor

One Direction on The X FactorLive tour in

In , Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor.[19] They all failed to progress in the "Boys" category at the bootcamp stage of the competition, but were instead put together to form a five-piece boy band,[20] thus qualifying for the "Groups" category. Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge,[19][21][22] and Simon Cowell have both claimed to have come up with the idea of forming the band. In , Cowell said that it "took him 10 minutes to put them together as a group".[23] Subsequently, the group got together for two weeks to get to know each other and to practise.[24][25] Styles came up with the name One Direction.[24] For their qualifying song at "judges' houses", and their first song as a group, One Direction sang an acoustic version of "Torn".[26] Cowell later commented that their performance convinced him that they "were confident, fun, like a gang of friends, and kind of fearless as well."[27] Within the first four weeks of the live shows, they were his final act in the competition. The group quickly gained popularity in the UK.[27]

One Direction achieved third place in the competition and immediately after the final, their song "Forever Young", which would have been released if they had won The X Factor, was leaked onto the internet.[28] Shortly afterwards it was confirmed that One Direction had been signed by Cowell to a reported £2&#;million Syco Records record contract.[29] Recording for their debut album began in January , as they flew to Los Angeles to work with RedOne, a record producer.[30] A book licensed by One Direction, One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), was published by HarperCollins in February ,[31] subsequently topping The Sunday Times Best Seller list.[32] The same month, the boy band and other contestants from the series participated in the X Factor Live Tour. During the tour, the group performed for , people throughout the UK.[33] After the tour concluded in April , the group continued working on their debut album.[30] Recording took place in Stockholm, London and Los Angeles, as One Direction worked with producers Carl Falk, Savan Kotecha, Steve Mac, and Rami Yacoub, among others.[34][35]

Up All Night

Released in September , One Direction's debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful", was a commercial and international success. It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart after becoming the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment single in history.[36][37] Subsequent singles, "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing", peaked in the UK Singles Chart top ten.[38][39] In November , they signed a record deal with Columbia Records in North America.[40]Steve Barnett, the co-chairman of Columbia Records, said it was not a difficult decision to sign One Direction; "I just thought there was a void, and maybe they could seize and hold it."[41] That same month, they released Up All Night, their debut studio album, in the UK and Ireland. Critically commended for its appeal to the teenage audience,[42][43][44] it became the UK's fastest-selling debut album of [45] In December , they embarked on their first headlining UK concert tour, the Up All Night Tour.[46]

Upon One Direction's arrival in the US in February , the group embarked on a radio promotion spree, as well as their first North American concert tour as an opening act for Big Time Rush, opening 16 shows after they had completed the first leg of the Up All Night Tour.[47][48] That month, they announced that an Oceania leg had been added to the tour.[49] They made their first US television appearance on The Today Show, at the Rockefeller Center; an estimated 15, fans descended on the plaza.[50] "What Makes You Beautiful" was officially released in the United States that same month,[51] where it debuted on the Billboard Hot at number 28, becoming the highest debut for a British act since [52] On the US Billboard Hot , it reached as high as number four. As of June , it has sold million copies in the US[53] and over 7 million copes worldwide.[54]Up All Night was released internationally in March, and One Direction became the first UK group to have their debut album reach number one in the US,[55] and were inducted into the Guinness World Records as a result.[56] After the album's international release, it topped the charts in sixteen countries.[57]Up All Night also became the first album by a boy band to sell , digital copies in the US and, by August , had sold over 3 million copies worldwide.[58][59] It was the third global best-selling album of the year, selling million copies.[60] Following the success of the album, a North American leg of the tour was announced later that month.[61]

The Up All Night Tour, comprising 62 shows, was met with positivity both critically and commercially, with critics praising their singing abilities and stage presence, and with tickets selling out in minutes.[62][63][64][65][66][67][68] A recording of a concert from the tour, Up All Night: The Live Tour, was released in May [69] In addition to the DVD topping the charts in twenty-five countries, its global sales had exceeded 1 million copies by August [59][70] One Direction's first book to be licensed in America, Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction, published in the US in May , topped The New York Times Best Seller list.[71] In June , Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Music Entertainment UK, stated how he expects One Direction to represent a $&#;million business empire over [72] Gatfield stated, "What you might not know about One Direction is that they already represent a $50&#;million business and that's a figure we expect to double next year".[72] In August , the group's record sales exceeded 8 million singles, 3&#;million albums, and 1&#;million DVDs, and they performed "What Makes You Beautiful" at the Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London, which represented the handover to Rio de Janeiro as the host of the Summer Olympics.[59][73] One Direction were the biggest winners of the MTV Video Music Awards winning their three nominations on 6 September , including Best New Artist.[74]

In April , an American band that went by the same name filed a trademark infringement lawsuit.[75] According to the lawsuit, the US band had been using the name since , recorded two albums and filed an application to register the trademark name in the US in February [75] The US band said they were entitled to three times the profits made by the UK band, as well as compensatory damages in excess of US$1&#;million.[75] The lawsuit claimed that Syco and Sony Music "chose to ignore the plaintiff's rights and wilfully infringed them" after they realised in early that the two bands shared the same name.[75] Syco Records subsequently counter-sued, suggesting the US group was trying to make money from One Direction's success and that the boy band was the first to use the name in US interstate commerce.[76] The BBC reported in September that the UK group won the legal dispute over the right to keep using their band name; the US band changed its name to Uncharted Shores.[76] The change of name was announced in a joint statement that also noted both groups were happy with the outcome.[76]

Take Me Home

In September , "Live While We're Young", the lead single from the group's second album, was released, and was a global success. It reached the top ten in almost every country it charted in and recorded the highest one-week opening sales figure for a song by a non-US artist in the US.[77] A second single, "Little Things", resulted in the band's second number one single in the UK.[78] In November , One Direction's second studio album, Take Me Home, was released.[79] It was an international hit, reaching number one in over 35 countries. Upon reaching number one on the Billboard , the group became the first boy band in US chart history to record two number-one albums in the same calendar year alongside becoming the first group since to record two number-one albums in the same year.[80] One Direction became the first group ever to have their first two albums reach atop the Billboard .[81]Take Me Home sold , copies in its first week in the US, debuted atop the Billboard , and topped the charts in more than thirty-four other countries.[82][83] Additionally, Up All Night and Take Me Home were the number three and number four best-selling albums of globally, each album selling over &#;million units worldwide.[84] The album and "Little Things" both debuted at number one in the UK simultaneously, making One Direction the youngest act in British chart history to achieve that.[85]

Take Me Home was written in groups and has an average of just under five songwriters per track. Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, and Carl Falk, who composed One Direction's hits "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing", spent six months in Stockholm developing songs for the album, and were able to shape melodies around their tones.[86] One Direction began recording the album in May , in Stockholm at Kinglet Studios.[87][88][89] The album cover artwork features the group surrounding a traditional British K2 red telephone box, a familiar sight on the streets of the UK.[90]Take Me Home garnered mixed reviews from music critics. Artistry

One Direction's debut studio album, Up All Night (), is predominantly a pop music record, containing elements of teen pop, dance-pop, pop rock, with electropop and rock influences.[][][][]Digital Spy's Robert Copsey described the album as a "collection of PG pop rock with killer choruses",[] while The New York Times considered it "full of easy rock-inflected pop, blithe and sometimes clever".[] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard acknowledged that the album demonstrates an originality in sound that was "necessary for the revitalization of the boy band movement".[] The songs "One Thing" and "What Makes You Beautiful" were particularly noted for the genres of power pop and pop rock, for their "powerhouse" guitar riffs and "forceful" choruses.[][][][]

Their second studio album, Take Me Home (), is characterised by rock-inherited pop, prominent electric guitar riffs, bright synthesisers, a homogeneous sound and message, and the pitch-correcting software Auto-Tune.[94][95][96][][]Alexis Petridis of The Guardian interpreted its signature sound as a "peppy, synth-bolstered take on earlys new-wave pop, heavy on clipped rhythms and chugging guitars", which, he said, is at least an improvement on the substitute contemporary R&B "that was once the grim lot of the boyband".[95] Jon Caramanica, writing in The New York Times, considered the album "far more mechanical" than their debut album, although noted that it is sonically and lyrically similar.[94] The album's lyricism speaks of falling in love, unrequited love, the insistence that flaws are what make a person unique, commitment, jealousy and longing for past significant others.[94][95][96][]

Erica Futterman for Rolling Stone favoured their live acoustic performances as both showing, "Horan's ability to play guitar, as well as One Direction's admirable live vocals.

Rolling Stone described the record as "saturated with retro vibes"; its songs "split the difference between big, splashy Eighties pop rock and more elegant Seventies flavours – a very pesky whipper-snapper move that's not so far from what Haim's hit "Days Are Gone" did last year".[]

And what could be better than one cute boy, if not five?"[] Bill Werde, a representative of Billboard magazine, commented, "There's a lot of possibility here, there's a lot of upside, that level of talent with those kinds of looks, it's really a perfect storm for a massive, massive successful phenomenon."[] In NPR, Maria Sherman noticed that before One Direction's breakthrough, boy bands were "off the radar" since NSYNC went on an indefinite hiatus in []

Caroline Watson, the band's original stylist, spoke about styling the band, "At the beginning I didn't want them all in black or all in leather&#;– that whole stereotypical boy band thing." Instead, her original idea was for them to be the "male equivalent to the Spice Girls", with each member being a part of the group but still having his own individual style.[]

Legacy

One Direction were described as sparking a resurgence in the interest in boy bands as well as forming part of a new "British Invasion" (along with acts like Adele) in the United States.[][][][][][]NPR described the group as "one of the biggest boy bands the world had ever seen"[] and the group has been described as "the world's biggest boy band" as recently as []Rolling Stone named "What Makes You Beautiful" the sixth greatest boy band song of all time.[]Billboard named Four the best boy band album of the last thirty years, calling it "the absolute standard-bearer for the last decade of pop".[] One Direction's music was considered pop that was rooted in guitar rock which was rare during their active years, with Rolling Stone calling the group "one of the great rock bands of the 21st century."[]

One Direction's rise to fame has been called "meteoric" with the group becoming the first British band to ever have their debut album top the US charts.[] During their continued rise in the United States in , the mania surrounding the group was dubbed "One Direction Infection."[] That same year, "1D World" stores were opened around the United States as the group worked on their second studio album to meet the high demand for the band and "to give fans the ultimate One Direction experience."[] Part of the group's rise to popularity was their "atypical construct" in the sense that they don't dance, rarely wear matching outfits, and are heavily tattooed, all three which were rare in boybands of the past.[] They were credited with breaking "the boy band mold."[] Despite their differences in that regard, the group still used an approach pioneered by The Beatles in which each member was applied a persona; Horan as "the cute Irish one", Malik as "the quiet and mysterious one", Payne as "the mature and sensible one", Styles as "the charming flirt" and Tomlinson as "the funny and irresponsible one".[]

Social media has become the new radio, it's never broken an act globally like this before."[] Will Bloomfield, the group's manager, added, "These guys live online, and so do their fans."[] Their management employs a social media team and the members all tweet themselves, "which helps create the illusion that they couldn't be any closer to their fans", according to Caspar Llewellyn Smith, writing for The Guardian.[] Sunil Singhvi, Twitter head of entertainment in the UK, stated that "the fans' ability, via Twitter, to tell Europeans about One Direction really catapulted them there, then from Europe to America, and now it's a global phenomenon."[] One Direction's Twitter account had amassed ten million followers by February , with the account gaining followers at an average of 21, per day.[] Their rise in success has been greatly credited due to social media, which allowed fans to not only spread the word about the group, but get live updates from concerts and interviews as well as about the band's whereabouts daily.[] One Direction, in their active years, were extremely present on social media and interacted with fans daily, giving them "an army of online fans."[]The Detroit News named them "the first megastar boyband of the Social Media Era."[]

Microsoft

American multinational technology company

Microsoft Corporation is an American multinationaltechnology corporation which produces computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and related services. Its best known software products are the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems, the Microsoft Officesuite, and the Internet Explorer and Edgeweb browsers. Its flagship hardware products are the Xboxvideo game consoles and the Microsoft Surface lineup of touchscreen personal computers. Microsoft ranked No. 21 in the Fortune rankings of the largest United States corporations by total revenue;[3] it was the world's largest software maker by revenue as of [4] It is considered one of the Big Five companies in the U.S. information technology industry, along with Amazon, Google (Alphabet), Apple, and Facebook (Meta).

Microsoft (the word being a portmanteau of "microcomputer software"[5]) was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, , to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair It rose to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mids, followed by Microsoft Windows. The company's initial public offering (IPO), and subsequent rise in its share price, created three billionaires and an estimated 12,&#;millionaires among Microsoft employees. Since the s, it has increasingly diversified from the operating system market and has made a number of corporate acquisitions, their largest being the acquisition of LinkedIn for $&#;billion in December ,[6] followed by their acquisition of Skype Technologies for $&#;billion in May [7]

As of [update], Microsoft is market-dominant in the IBM PC compatible operating system market and the office software suite market, although it has lost the majority of the overall operating system market to Android.[8] The company also produces a wide range of other consumer and enterprise software for desktops, laptops, tabs, gadgets, and servers, including Internet search (with Bing), the digital services market (through MSN), mixed reality (HoloLens), cloud computing (Azure), and software development (Visual Studio).

Steve Ballmer replaced Gates as CEO in , and later envisioned a "devices and services" strategy.[9] This unfolded with Microsoft acquiring Danger Inc. in ,[10] entering the personal computer production market for the first time in June with the launch of the Microsoft Surface line of tablet computers, and later forming Microsoft Mobile through the acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division. Since Satya Nadella took over as CEO in , the company has scaled back on hardware and has instead focused on cloud computing, a move that helped the company's shares reach its highest value since December [11][12]

Earlier dethroned by Apple in , in Microsoft reclaimed its position as the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.[13] In April , Microsoft reached the trillion-dollarmarket cap, becoming the third U.S. public company to be valued at over $1&#;trillion after Apple and Amazon respectively.[14] As of [update], Microsoft has the third-highest global brand valuation.[15]

– Founding

Childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen sought to make a business using their skills in computer programming.[17] In , they founded Traf-O-Data, which sold a rudimentary computer to track and analyze automobile traffic data. Gates enrolled at Harvard University while Allen pursued a degree in computer science at Washington State University, though he later dropped out to work at Honeywell.[18] The January issue of Popular Electronics featured Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems's (MITS) Altair microcomputer,[19] which inspired Allen to suggest that they could program a BASIC interpreter for the device. Gates called MITS and claimed that he had a working interpreter, and MITS requested a demonstration. Allen worked on a simulator for the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter, and it worked flawlessly when they demonstrated it to MITS in March in Albuquerque, New Mexico. MITS agreed to distribute it, marketing it as Altair BASIC.[16]:&#;,&#;–&#; Gates and Allen established Microsoft on April 4, , with Gates as CEO,[20] and Allen suggested the name "Micro-Soft", short for micro-computer software.[21][22] In August , the company formed an agreement with ASCII Magazine in Japan, resulting in its first international office of ASCII Microsoft.[23] Microsoft moved its headquarters to Bellevue, Washington, in January [20]

Microsoft entered the operating system (OS) business in with its own version of Unix called Xenix,[24] but it was MS-DOS that solidified the company's dominance. IBM awarded a contract to Microsoft in November to provide a version of the CP/M OS to be used in the IBM Personal Computer (IBM PC).[25] For this deal, Microsoft purchased a CP/M clone called DOS from Seattle Computer Products which it branded as MS-DOS, although IBM rebranded it to IBM PC DOS. Microsoft retained ownership of MS-DOS following the release of the IBM PC in August IBM had copyrighted the IBM PC BIOS, so other companies had to reverse engineer it in order for non-IBM hardware to run as IBM PC compatibles, but no such restriction applied to the operating systems. Microsoft eventually became the leading PC operating systems vendor.[26][27]:&#;&#; The company expanded into new markets with the release of the Microsoft Mouse in , as well as with a publishing division named Microsoft Press.[16]:&#;&#; Paul Allen resigned from Microsoft in after developing Hodgkin's disease.[28] Allen claimed in Idea Man: A Memoir by the Co-founder of Microsoft that Gates wanted to dilute his share in the company when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease because he did not think that he was working hard enough.[29] Allen later invested in low-tech sectors, sports teams, commercial real estate, neuroscience, private space flight, and more.[30]

– Windows and Office

Windows was released on November 20, , as the first version of the Microsoft Windows line

Microsoft released Microsoft Windows on November 20, , as a graphical extension for MS-DOS,[16]:&#;–,&#;&#; despite having begun jointly developing OS/2 with IBM the previous August.[31] Microsoft moved its headquarters from Bellevue to Redmond, Washington, on February 26, , and went public on March 13,[32] with the resulting rise in stock making an estimated four billionaires and 12,&#;millionaires from Microsoft employees.[33] Microsoft released its version of OS/2 to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on April 2, [16] In , the Federal Trade Commission examined Microsoft for possible collusion due to the partnership with IBM, marking the beginning of more than a decade of legal clashes with the government.[34]:&#;–&#; Meanwhile, the company was at work on Microsoft Windows NT, which was heavily based on their copy of the OS/2 code. It shipped on July 21, , with a new modular kernel and the bitWin32 application programming interface (API), making it easier to port from bit (MS-DOS-based) Windows. Microsoft informed IBM of Windows NT, and the OS/2 partnership deteriorated.[35]

In , Microsoft introduced the Microsoft Office suite which bundled separate applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.[16]:&#;&#; On May 22, Microsoft launched Windows , featuring streamlined user interface graphics and improved protected mode capability for the Intel processor,[36] and both Office and Windows became dominant in their respective areas.[37][38]

On July 27, , the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division filed a competitive impact statement which said: "Beginning in , and continuing until July 15, , Microsoft induced many OEMs to execute anti-competitive 'per processor' licenses. Under a per-processor license, an OEM pays Microsoft a royalty for each computer it sells containing a particular microprocessor, whether the OEM sells the computer with a Microsoft operating system or a non-Microsoft operating system. In effect, the royalty payment to Microsoft when no Microsoft product is being used acts as a penalty, or tax, on the OEM's use of a competing PC operating system. Since , Microsoft's use of per processor licenses has increased."[39]

– Foray into the Web, Windows 95, Windows XP, and Xbox

In , Microsoft released Windows CE, a version of the operating system meant for personal digital assistants and other tiny computers.

Following Bill Gates' internal "Internet Tidal Wave memo" on May 26, , Microsoft began to redefine its offerings and expand its product line into computer networking and the World Wide Web.[40] With a few exceptions of new companies, like Netscape, Microsoft was the only major and established company that acted fast enough to be a part of the World Wide Web practically from the start. Other companies like Borland, WordPerfect, Novell, IBM and Lotus, being much slower to adapt to the new situation, would give Microsoft a market dominance.[41] The company released Windows 95 on August 24, , featuring pre-emptive multitasking, a completely new user interface with a novel start button, and bit compatibility; similar to NT, it provided the Win32 API.[42][43]:&#;20&#; Windows 95 came bundled with the online serviceMSN, which was at first intended to be a competitor to the Internet,[dubious &#; discuss] and (for OEMs) Internet Explorer, a Web browser. Internet Explorer was not bundled with the retail Windows 95 boxes, because the boxes were printed before the team finished the Web browser, and instead was included in the Windows 95 Plus! pack.[44] Backed by a high-profile marketing campaign[45] and what The New York Times called "the splashiest, most frenzied, most expensive introduction of a computer product in the industry's history,"[46] Windows 95 quickly became a success.[47] Branching out into new markets in , Microsoft and General Electric's NBC unit created a new 24/7 cable news channel, MSNBC.[48] Microsoft created Windows CE , a new OS designed for devices with low memory and other constraints, such as personal digital assistants.[49] In October , the Justice Department filed a motion in the Federal District Court, stating that Microsoft violated an agreement signed in and asked the court to stop the bundling of Internet Explorer with Windows.[16]:&#;–&#;

Microsoft released the first installment in the Xboxseries of consoles in The Xbox, graphically powerful compared to its rivals, featured a standard PC's &#;MHz Intel Pentium III processor.

On January 13, , Bill Gates handed over the CEO position to Steve Ballmer, an old college friend of Gates and employee of the company since , while creating a new position for himself as Chief Software Architect.[16]:&#;,&#;&#;[20] Various companies including Microsoft formed the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance in October to (among other things) increase security and protect intellectual property through identifying changes in hardware and software. Critics decried the alliance as a way to enforce indiscriminate restrictions over how consumers use software, and over how computers behave, and as a form of digital rights management: for example the scenario where a computer is not only secured for its owner, but also secured against its owner as well.[50][51] On April 3, , a judgment was handed down in the case of United States v. Microsoft Corp.,[52] calling the company an "abusive monopoly."[53] Microsoft later settled with the U.S. Department of Justice in [32] On October 25, , Microsoft released Windows XP, unifying the mainstream and NT lines of OS under the NT codebase.[54] The company released the Xbox later that year, entering the video game console market dominated by Sony and Nintendo.[55] In March the European Union brought antitrust legal action against the company, citing it abused its dominance with the Windows OS, resulting in a judgment of €&#;million ($&#;million) and requiring Microsoft to produce new versions of Windows XP without Windows Media Player: Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N.[56][57] In November , the company's second video game console, the Xbox , was released. There were two versions, a basic version for $ and a deluxe version for $[58]

Increasingly present in the hardware business following Xbox, Microsoft in released the Zune series of digital media players, a successor of its previous software platform Portable Media Center. These expanded on previous hardware commitments from Microsoft following its original Microsoft Mouse in ; as of the company sold the best-selling wired keyboard (Natural Ergonomic Keyboard ), mouse (IntelliMouse), and desktop webcam (LifeCam) in the United States. That year the company also launched the Surface "digital table", later renamed PixelSense.[59]

– Microsoft Azure, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Microsoft Stores

CEO Steve Ballmerat the MIXevent in In an interview about his management style in , he mentioned that his first priority was to get the people he delegates to in order. Ballmer also emphasized the need to continue pursuing new technologies even if initial attempts fail, citing the original attempts with Windows as an example.[60]
Headquarters of the European Commission, which has imposed several fines on Microsoft

Released in January , the next version of Windows, Vista, focused on features, security and a redesigned user interface dubbed Aero.[61][62]Microsoft Office , released at the same time, featured a "Ribbon" user interface which was a significant departure from its predecessors. Relatively strong sales of both products helped to produce a record profit in [63] The European Union imposed another fine of €&#;million ($&#;billion) for Microsoft's lack of compliance with the March judgment on February 27, , saying that the company charged rivals unreasonable prices for key information about its workgroup and backoffice servers. Microsoft stated that it was in compliance and that "these fines are about the past issues that have been resolved".[64] also saw the creation of a multi-core unit at Microsoft, following the steps of server companies such as Sun and IBM.[65]

Gates retired from his role as Chief Software Architect on June 27, , a decision announced in June , while retaining other positions related to the company in addition to being an advisor for the company on key projects.[66][67]Azure Services Platform, the company's entry into the cloud computing market for Windows, launched on October 27, [68] On February 12, , Microsoft announced its intent to open a chain of Microsoft-branded retail stores, and on October 22, , the first retail Microsoft Store opened in Scottsdale, Arizona; the same day Windows 7 was officially released to the public. Windows 7's focus was on refining Vista with ease-of-use features and performance enhancements, rather than an extensive reworking of Windows.[69][70][71]

As the smartphone industry boomed in the late s, Microsoft had struggled to keep up with its rivals in providing a modern smartphone operating system, falling behind Apple and Google-sponsored Android in the United States.[72] As a result, in Microsoft revamped their aging flagship mobile operating system, Windows Mobile, replacing it with the new Windows Phone OS that was released in October that year. It used a new user interface design language, codenamed "Metro", which prominently used simple shapes, typography and iconography, utilizing the concept of minimalism. Microsoft implemented a new strategy for the software industry, providing a consistent user experience across all smartphones using the Windows Phone OS. It launched an alliance with Nokia in and Microsoft worked closely with the company to co-develop Windows Phone,[73] but remained partners with long-time Windows Mobile OEM HTC.[74] Microsoft is a founding member of the Open Networking Foundation started on March 23, Fellow founders were Google, HP Networking, Yahoo!, Verizon Communications, Deutsche Telekom and 17 other companies. This nonprofit organization is focused on providing support for a cloud computing initiative called Software-Defined Networking.[75] The initiative is meant to speed innovation through simple software changes in telecommunications networks, wireless networks, data centers and other networking areas.[76]

– Windows 8/, Xbox One, storycall.us, and Surface devices

Following the release of Windows Phone, Microsoft undertook a gradual rebranding of its product range throughout and , with the corporation's logos, products, services and websites adopting the principles and concepts of the Metro design language.[77] Microsoft unveiled Windows 8, an operating system designed to power both personal computers and tablet computers, in Taipei in June [78] A developer preview was released on September 13, which was subsequently replaced by a consumer preview on February 29, , and released to the public in May.[79] The Surface was unveiled on June 18, becoming the first computer in the company's history to have its hardware made by Microsoft.[80][81] On June 25, Microsoft paid US$&#;billion to buy the social network Yammer.[82] On July 31, they launched the storycall.usmail service to compete with Gmail.[83] On September 4, , Microsoft released Windows Server [84]

In July , Microsoft sold its 50% stake in MSNBC, which it had run as a joint venture with NBC since [85] On October 1, Microsoft announced its intention to launch a news operation, part of a new-look MSN, with Windows 8 later in the month.[86] On October 26, , Microsoft launched Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface.[81][87] Three days later, Windows Phone 8 was launched.[88] To cope with the potential for an increase in demand for products and services, Microsoft opened a number of "holiday stores" across the U.S. to complement the increasing number of "bricks-and-mortar" Microsoft Stores that opened in [89] On March 29, , Microsoft launched a Patent Tracker.[90]

In August , the New York City Police Department announced a partnership with Microsoft for the development of the Domain Awareness System which is used for Police surveillance in New York City.[91]

The Kinect, a motion-sensing input device made by Microsoft and designed as a video game controller, first introduced in November , was upgraded for the release of the Xbox One video game console. Kinect's capabilities were revealed in May an ultra-wide p camera, function in the dark due to an infrared sensor, higher-end processing power and new software, the ability to distinguish between fine movements (such as a thumb movement), and determining a user's heart rate by looking at their face.[92] Microsoft filed a patent application in that suggests that the corporation may use the Kinect camera system to monitor the behavior of television viewers as part of a plan to make the viewing experience more interactive. On July 19, , Microsoft stocks suffered their biggest one-day percentage sell-off since the year , after its fourth-quarter report raised concerns among the investors on the poor showings of both Windows 8 and the Surface tablet. Microsoft suffered a loss of more than US$32&#;billion.[93]

On July 20, , Microsoft posted its first quarterly loss ever, despite earning record revenues for the quarter and fiscal year, with a net loss of $&#;million due to a writedown related to the advertising company aQuantive, which had been acquired for $&#;billion back in [] As of January , Microsoft's market capitalization stood at $B,[] making it the 8th largest company in the world by market capitalization.[] On November 14, , Microsoft overtook ExxonMobil to become the second most-valuable company by market capitalization, behind only Apple Inc. Its total market value was over $B—with the stock price hitting $ a share, the highest since early [] In , Reuters reported that Microsoft Corp had earnings abroad of $&#;billion which were untaxed by the Internal Revenue Service. Under U.S. law, corporations don't pay income tax on overseas profits until the profits are brought into the United States.[]

In November , the company won a $&#;million military contract with the U.S. government to bring augmented reality (AR) headset technology into the weapon repertoires of American soldiers. The two-year contract may result in follow-on orders of more than , headsets, according to documentation describing the bidding process. One of the contract's tag lines for the augmented reality technology seems to be its ability to enable "25 bloodless battles before the 1st battle", suggesting that actual combat training is going to be an essential aspect of the augmented reality headset capabilities.[]

Subsidiaries

Microsoft is an international business. As such, it needs subsidiaries present in whatever national markets it chooses to harvest. An example is Microsoft Canada, which it established in [] Other countries have similar installations, to funnel profits back up to Redmond and to distribute the dividends to the holders of MSFT stock.

Marketing

In , Microsoft commissioned research firms to do independent studies comparing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of Windows Server to Linux; the firms concluded that companies found Windows easier to administrate than Linux, thus those using Windows would administrate faster resulting in lower costs for their company (i.e. lower TCO).[] This spurred a wave of related studies; a study by the Yankee Group concluded that upgrading from one version of Windows Server to another costs a fraction of the switching costs from Windows Server to Linux, although companies surveyed noted the increased security and reliability of Linux servers and concern about being locked into using Microsoft products.[] Another study, released by the Open Source Development Labs, claimed that the Microsoft studies were "simply outdated and one-sided" and their survey concluded that the TCO of Linux was lower due to Linux administrators managing more servers on average and other reasons.[]

As part of the "Get the Facts" campaign, Microsoft highlighted the .NET Framework trading platform that it had developed in partnership with Accenture for the London Stock Exchange, claiming that it provided "five nines" reliability. After suffering extended downtime and unreliability[][] the London Stock Exchange announced in that it was planning to drop its Microsoft solution and switch to a Linux-based one in [][]

In , Microsoft hired a political pollster named Mark Penn, whom The New York Times called "famous for bulldozing" his political opponents[] as Executive Vice-president, Advertising and Strategy. Penn created a series of negative advertisements targeting one of Microsoft's chief competitors, Google. The advertisements, called "Scroogled", attempt to make the case that Google is "screwing" consumers with search results rigged to favor Google's paid advertisers, that Gmail violates the privacy of its users to place ad results related to the content of their emails and shopping results, which favor Google products. Tech publications like TechCrunch have been highly critical of the advertising campaign,[] while Google employees have embraced it.[]

Layoffs

Main article: Criticism of Microsoft

In July , Microsoft announced plans to lay off 18, employees. Microsoft employed , people as of June 5, , making this about a 14 percent reduction of its workforce as the biggest Microsoft lay off ever. This included 12, professional and factory personnel. Previously, Microsoft had eliminated 5, jobs in in line with the Great Recession of –[][] In September , Microsoft laid off 2, people, including people in the Seattle–Redmond area, where the company is headquartered. The firings came as a second wave of the layoffs that were previously announced. This brought the total number to over 15, out of the 18, expected cuts.[] In October , Microsoft revealed that it was almost done with the elimination of 18, employees, which was its largest-ever layoff sweep.[] In July , Microsoft announced another 7, job cuts in the next several months.[] In May , Microsoft announced another 1, job cuts mostly in its Nokia mobile phone division. As a result, the company will record an impairment and restructuring charge of approximately $&#;million, of which approximately $&#;million will relate to severance payments.[]

United States government

Main article: Criticism of Microsoft

Microsoft provides information about reported bugs in their software to intelligence agencies of the United States government, prior to the public release of the fix. A Microsoft spokesperson has stated that the corporation runs several programs that facilitate the sharing of such information with the U.S. government.[] Following media reports about PRISM, NSA's massive electronic surveillance program, in May , several technology companies were identified as participants, including Microsoft.[] According to leaks of said program, Microsoft joined the PRISM program in [] However, in June , an official statement from Microsoft flatly denied their participation in the program:

"We provide customer data only when we receive a legally binding order or subpoena to do so, and never on a voluntary basis. In addition we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers. If the government has a broader voluntary national security program to gather customer data, we don't participate in it."[]

During the first six months in , Microsoft had received requests that affected between 15, and 15, accounts.[] In December , the company made statement to further emphasize the fact that they take their customers' privacy and data protection very seriously, even saying that "government snooping potentially now constitutes an 'advanced persistent threat,' alongside sophisticated malware and cyber attacks".[] The statement also marked the beginning of three-part program to enhance Microsoft's encryption and transparency efforts. On July 1, , as part of this program they opened the first (of many) Microsoft Transparency Center, that provides "participating governments with the ability to review source code for our key products, assure themselves of their software integrity, and confirm there are no "back doors."[] Microsoft has also argued that the United States Congress should enact strong privacy regulations to protect consumer data.[]

In April , the company sued the U.S. government, arguing that secrecy orders were preventing the company from disclosing warrants to customers in violation of the company's and customers' rights. Microsoft argued that it was unconstitutional for the government to indefinitely ban Microsoft from informing its users that the government was requesting their emails and other documents, and that the Fourth Amendment made it so people or businesses had the right to know if the government searches or seizes their property. On October 23, , Microsoft said it would drop the lawsuit as a result of a policy change by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ). The DoJ had "changed data request rules on alerting the Internet users about agencies accessing their information."

Corporate identity

Corporate culture

Technical reference for developers and articles for various Microsoft magazines such as Microsoft Systems Journal (MSJ) are available through the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN). MSDN also offers subscriptions for companies and individuals, and the more expensive subscriptions usually offer access to pre-release beta versions of Microsoft software.[][] In April , Microsoft launched a community site for developers and users, titled Channel 9, that provides a wiki and an Internet forum.[] Another community site that provides daily videocasts and other services, Onnet, launched on March 3, [] Free technical support is traditionally provided through online Usenet newsgroups, and CompuServe in the past, monitored by Microsoft employees; there can be several newsgroups for a single product. Helpful people can be elected by peers or Microsoft employees for Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) status, which entitles them to a sort of special social status and possibilities for awards and other benefits.[]

Noted for its internal lexicon, the expression "eating your own dog food" is used to describe the policy of using pre-release and beta versions of products inside Microsoft in an effort to test them in "real-world" situations.[] This is usually shortened to just "dog food" and is used as noun, verb, and adjective. Another bit of jargon, FYIFV or FYIV ("Fuck You, I'm [Fully] Vested"), is used by an employee to indicate they are financially independent and can avoid work anytime they wish.[]

Microsoft is an outspoken opponent of the cap on H-1B visas, which allow companies in the U.S. to employ certain foreign workers. Bill Gates claims the cap on H1B visas makes it difficult to hire employees for the company, stating "I'd certainly get rid of the H1B cap" in [] Critics of H1B visas argue that relaxing the limits would result in increased unemployment for U.S. citizens due to H1B workers working for lower salaries.[] The Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index, a report of how progressive the organization deems company policies towards LGBT employees, rated Microsoft as 87% from to and as % from to after they allowed gender expression.[]

In August , Microsoft implemented a policy for all companies providing subcontractors to require 12 weeks of paid parental leave to each employee. This expands on the former requirement from requiring 15 days of paid vacation and sick leave each year.[] In , Microsoft established its own parental leave policy to allow 12 weeks off for parental leave with an additional 8 weeks for the parent who gave birth.[]

Environment

In , Greenpeace released a report rating the top ten big brands in cloud computing on their sources of electricity for their data centers. At the time, data centers consumed up to 2% of all global electricity and this amount was projected to increase. Phil Radford of Greenpeace said "we are concerned that this new explosion in electricity use could lock us into old, polluting energy sources instead of the clean energy available today,"[] and called on "Amazon, Microsoft and other leaders of the information-technology industry must embrace clean energy to power their cloud-based data centers."[] In , Microsoft agreed to buy power generated by a Texas wind project to power one of its data centers.[] Microsoft is ranked on the 17th place in Greenpeace's Guide to Greener Electronics (16th Edition) that ranks 18 electronics manufacturers according to their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change.[] Microsoft's timeline for phasing out brominated flame retardant (BFRs) and phthalates in all products is but its commitment to phasing out PVC is not clear. As of January , it has no products that are completely free from PVC and BFRs.[]

Microsoft's main U.S. campus received a silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program in , and it installed over 2, solar panels on top of its buildings at its Silicon Valley campus, generating approximately 15 percent of the total energy needed by the facilities in April [] Microsoft makes use of alternative forms of transit. It created one of the world's largest private bus systems, the "Connector", to transport people from outside the company; for on-campus transportation, the "Shuttle Connect" uses a large fleet of hybrid cars to save fuel. The company also subsidizes regional public transport, provided by Sound Transit and King County Metro, as an incentive.[][] In February , however, Microsoft took a stance against adding additional public transport and high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to the State Route and its floating bridge connecting Redmond to Seattle; the company did not want to delay the construction any further.[] Microsoft was ranked number 1 in the list of the World's Best Multinational Workplaces by the Great Place to Work Institute in [] In January , the company promised to remove from the environment all of the carbon that it has emitted since its foundation in [] On October 9, , Microsoft made their work from home policy permanent.[] In January , the company announced on Twitter to join the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, which engages the cloud infrastructure and data centers industries to reach climate neutrality in Europe by

Headquarters

The corporate headquarters, informally known as the Microsoft Redmond campus, is located at One Microsoft Way in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft initially moved onto the grounds of the campus on February 26, , weeks before the company went public on March The headquarters has since experienced multiple expansions since its establishment. It is estimated to encompass over 8&#;million ft2 (,&#;m2) of office space and 30,–40, employees.[] Additional offices are located in Bellevue and Issaquah, Washington (90, employees worldwide). The company is planning to upgrade its Mountain View, California, campus on a grand scale. The company has occupied this campus since In , the company bought the acre (13&#;ha) campus, with plans to renovate and expand it by 25%.[] Microsoft operates an East Coast headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.[]

Flagship stores

On October 26, , the company opened its retail location on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The location features a five-story glass storefront and is 22, square feet.[] As per company executives, Microsoft had been on the lookout for a flagship location since [] The company's retail locations are part of a greater strategy to help build a connection with its consumers. The opening of the store coincided with the launch of the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4.[] On November 12, , Microsoft opened a second flagship store, located in Sydney's Pitt Street Mall.[]

Logo

Microsoft adopted the so-called "Pac-Man Logo," designed by Scott Baker, in Baker stated "The new logo, in Helvetica italic typeface, has a slash between the o and s to emphasize the "soft" part of the name and convey motion and speed."[] Dave Norris ran an internal joke campaign to save the old logo, which was green, in all uppercase, and featured a fanciful letter O, nicknamed the blibbet, but it was discarded.[] Microsoft's logo with the tagline "Your potential. Our passion."—below the main corporate name—is based on a slogan Microsoft used in In , the company started using the logo in the United States and eventually started a television campaign with the slogan, changed from the previous tagline of "Where do you want to go today?"[][][] During the private MGX (Microsoft Global Exchange) conference in , Microsoft unveiled the company's next tagline, "Be What's Next."[] They also had a slogan/tagline "Making it all make sense."[]

On August 23, , Microsoft unveiled a new corporate logo at the opening of its 23rd Microsoft store in Boston, indicating the company's shift of focus from the classic style to the tile-centric modern interface, which it uses/will use on the Windows Phone platform, Xbox , Windows 8 and the upcoming Office Suites.[] The new logo also includes four squares with the colors of the then-current Windows logo which have been used to represent Microsoft's four major products: Windows (blue), Office (red), Xbox (green) and Bing (yellow).[] The logo resembles the opening of one of the commercials for Windows [][]
