Deploy Office (for IT Pros)

To configure and perform deployments of volume licensed versions of Office , including Project and Visio, for users in your organization, you use the Office Deployment Tool (ODT). The Office Customization Tool (OCT) that you previously used for Windows Installer (MSI) is no longer used.

The installation files for Office are available on the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN) on the internet instead of on the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). You can install Office directly from the Office CDN. Or, you can download the installation files from the Office CDN to a location on your local network, such as a shared folder, and install Office from that location. You can use different methods for different sets of computers in your organization. Whichever method you choose, you use the ODT.

Installing directly from the Office CDN requires the least amount of administrative effort and is recommended. But you might have constraints that prevent you from installing directly from the internet. For example, some computers might not have connectivity to the internet or you may have limited bandwidth to the internet.

Download the Office Deployment Tool from the Microsoft Download Center

The Office Deployment Tool is a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. We recommend that you always download and use the most current version of the ODT.

After you download the Office Deployment Tool, double-click on the officedeploymenttool executable (.exe) file to extract the ODT files. When you are finished, you should have several files: storycall.us and some sample storycall.us files. For an Office specific sample, see Sample storycall.us file to use with the Office Deployment Tool.

The storycall.us file is the ODT and is a command-line tool that supports downloading and installing Office The storycall.us files are sample files to get you started. You use the storycall.us file to provide settings for the ODT to use when downloading or installing Office The storycall.us is a simple xml file that can be created and edited in any text editor, such as Notepad. You can name the file anything that you want, as long as it retains the xml file extension.

Create the storycall.us

Once you have a copy of the ODT, you need to create a storycall.us file. You can create multiple storycall.us files to be used with the ODT. For example, you would create a storycall.us file to download and install the bit version of Office Professional Plus in English and a different storycall.us file to install the bit version of Visio Professional in French. When you run the ODT from an elevated command prompt, you specify which storycall.us file to use.

Tip

Instead of using a text editor to create your storycall.us, we recommend that you use the Office Customization Tool (OCT). The OCT provides a web-based interface for making your selections and creating your storycall.us file to be used with the Office Deployment Tool. For more information, see Overview of the Office Customization Tool. Please note that this is different than the Office Customization Tool that you might have used in the past to install volume licensed versions of Office that used Windows Installer (MSI) as the installation technology.

There are a series of settings in the storycall.us file that you configure to customize the Office download or installation. The following table lists the most common settings to configure in the storycall.us file.

Configurationstorycall.us settingAdditional information
Where to download the Office installation files to and where to install Office from

For example, \\server\share (a shared folder on your local network)
SourcePathIf you don’t specify a SourcePath when using the ODT to install Office, the ODT looks for the installation files in the folder it’s located in. If it doesn’t find the Office installation files there, it goes to the Office CDN to get the installation files.

We recommend that you install Office directly from the Office CDN, if internet connectivity and network bandwidth make that possible.
Which products to download or install

For example, Office Professional Plus
Product IDValid values for volume licensed versions of Office include the following:
- ProPlusVolume
- StandardVolume
- ProjectProVolume
- ProjectStdVolume
- VisioProVolume
- VisioStdVolume

For a list of Product IDs for other volume licensed versions of Office , such as Access , see Product IDs that are supported by the Office Deployment Tool for Click-to-Run.

Use Multiple Activation (MAK) to activate Office PIDKEYEnter the product key for MAK activation.
Which languages to download or install

For example, English (en-us) and French (fr-fr).
Language IDYou can install multiple languages at the same time you’re Installing Office , or you can install them later.

For more information, see Deploy languages for Office
Which proofing tools to installProduct IDThe Product ID is "ProofingTools" and is used in combination with the Language ID.

For more information, see Deploy languages for Office
Which edition of Office to download or install.

For example, the bit version.
OfficeClientEditionValid xml values are "32" and ""

All Office products on the computer must be of the same architecture. You can’t have both bit and bit Office products installed on the same computer.

We recommend bit on computers that have 4 gb or more of memory. But you should assess application compatibility and other factors that might require you to use the bit version.

For more information, see Choose between the bit or bit version of Office.
Which apps to install

For example, all apps except Publisher.
ExcludeAppBy default, all apps included in Office Professional Plus are installed.

For example, to not install Publisher, you can include the following line in your storycall.us:

<ExcludeApp ID="Publisher" />

For more information, see ExcludeApp element.
Where to get security and quality updates from.

For example, directly from the Office CDN on the internet.
UpdatePathThe default is to get updates directly from the Office CDN on the internet. This is recommended and requires the least amount of administrative effort.

But if you need to update computers that don’t have connectivity to the internet, you can specify that Office gets updates, for example, from a shared folder on your local network. But this means that you must download the updates from the Office CDN and copy them to the shared folder.

For more information, see Update Office (for IT Pros).
Which update channel to install from and get updates fromChannelOffice uses the concept of update channels to determine which updates an installed version of Office receives.

For more information, see Update channel for Office
Whether to remove previous Windows Installer (MSI) versions of Office before installing Office RemoveMSIThis is recommended.

For more information, see Remove existing versions of Office before installing Office

Tip

More information about these storycall.us settings is available here: Configuration options for the Office Deployment Tool. Keep in mind that not all the information in that article applies to Office For example, the settings related to shared computer activation, such as SharedComputerLicensing and SCLCacheOverride, don’t apply to Office

Sample storycall.us file to use with the Office Deployment Tool

The following is a sample storycall.us file that can be used to either download or install the bit version of Office Professional Plus in English using a shared folder on your local network and activate by using MAK. If you’re using this storycall.us to install Office , previous Windows Installer (MSI) versions of Office are removed as part of the installation process. Also, even though it’s not specified in the storycall.us file, updates are automatically enabled and are configured to come directly from the Office CDN, because those are the default settings.

For the PIDKEY, replace #####-#####-#####-#####-##### with your MAK client activation key.

Remove existing versions of Office before installing Office

We recommend that you uninstall any previous versions of Office before installing volume licensed versions of Office To help you uninstall versions of Office that use Windows Installer (MSI) as the installation technology, you can use the Office Deployment Tool and specify the RemoveMSI element in your storycall.us file.

There are several ways that you can use the RemoveMSI element when installing volume licensed versions of Office

  • Uninstall all Office products on the computer.
  • Identify any existing language resources, like language packs, and install the same languages.
  • Keep some Office products and uninstall all other Office products on the computer.

RemoveMSI can be used to uninstall , , or versions of Office, Visio, or Project that were installed using Windows Installer (MSI).

For more information about using RemoveMSI, see Remove existing MSI versions of Office when upgrading to Microsoft Apps. Even though this article is about Microsoft Apps, most of the information also applies to volume licensed versions of Office

Download the Office installation files

Once you have a copy of the ODT and have created your storycall.us file, you can download the Office installation files to your local network. To do that, open an elevated command prompt, go to the folder where you saved the ODT and the storycall.us file, and type this command:

If you have saved the storycall.us file with a different name, use that name in the command.

It will look as if nothing is happening, but the download is happening in the background. Once the download is complete, you are returned to a command prompt.

If you want to check that the files are downloading, go to the location you specified for your SourcePath in the storycall.us file. You should see a folder named “Office” with a subfolder named “Data.” There will also be a folder named with the version number of the download. For example, Which files you see and the names of the files depend on whether you are downloading the bit or bit version of Office and which languages you are downloading.

Here some additional details about downloading Office installation files:

  • You must download the bit and bit versions separately.
  • All volume licensed versions of Office – such as Office Professional Plus , Visio Professional , and Project Professional – are included in the same download, regardless of which products you specify in the storycall.us file. This helps you save disk space on your local network. The core files for the Office products are in the storycall.us or storycall.us file, depending if it’s the bit or bit version of Office.

Install Office by using the Office Deployment Tool

Once you have a copy of the ODT and have created your storycall.us file (and downloaded the Office installation files to your local network, if necessary), you can install Office To do that, open an elevated command prompt, go to the folder where you saved the ODT and the storycall.us file, and type the following command:

If you have saved the storycall.us file with a different name, use that name in the command.

Once the installation is complete, you are returned to a command prompt and you can go open Office programs you’ve installed.

Install Office by using Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager

You can also use Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager to deploy volume licensed versions of Office Configuration Manager (current branch) has a wizard that steps you through the process and builds the storycall.us file for you. Earlier versions of Configuration Manager require you to download the ODT and create your own storycall.us file.

  • Configuration Manager (current branch): If you’re using Configuration Manager (current branch), you can use the Office Client Installation wizard to deploy Office You must be using at least version , but version is recommended. You’ll see an entry for Office Professional Plus in the Office Client Installation wizard. On that same page, you can also select to install Project and Visio.

  • System Center R2 Configuration Manager: If you’re using System Center R2 Configuration Manager, the steps are different and much more manual. First you need to get a copy of the ODT from the Microsoft Download Center and create the appropriate storycall.us file for your deployment. Then, in Configuration Manager, you create an application and a deployment type. After that you distribute the application and then deploy it.

Deploy languages for Office

You can use the ODT and the storycall.us file to install volume licensed versions of Office , including Project and Visio, in multiple languages. For more details, see Language element.

You can also just install proofing tools by specifying the Product ID as "ProofingTools" in your storycall.us file along with the appropriate Language IDs. Proofing tools packages, which are a new capability for Office , are much smaller than full language packs. Consider deploying proofing tools in cases where users work with documents in multiple languages but don’t need the Office product UI in all those languages. The proofing tools can be installed at the same time you’re installing Office , or you can install them later. They can also be installed whether or not the language pack for a given language is installed.

If you're upgrading from a Windows Installer (MSI) version of Office, you can get Click-to-Run versions of the same language resources – for example, language packs, language interface packs, or proofing tools – installed when you deploy Office For more information, see Remove existing MSI versions of Office when upgrading to Microsoft Apps. Even though this article is about Microsoft Apps, most of the information also applies to volume licensed versions of Office

  3. Type , and then press Enter.

Screenshot displays the retail type license.

In this example, the screen displays the Retail type license. If you have a volume license (VL) product, the license type is displayed as VL or Volume Licensing.

Office

Method 1: Search DVD or ISO file for Admin folder

This method requires that you have access to the DVD or ISO file that's used to install your Office product.

  1. Open File Explorer, and navigate to the DVD or ISO file.

  2. Search for a folder that's named Admin.

    • If the Admin folder exists, this disc is a volume license (VL) edition.
    • If the Admin folder does not exist, this disc is a retail edition.

    Note

Retail media includes a lowercase "r" before the ".WW" in the folder name and before the "storycall.us" in the MSI file name. For example, the installation file for Proplus retail is Proplusrstorycall.us in the ProplusrWW folder. Proplus non-retail is storycall.us in the PlusplusWW.

Screenshot of an example of Proplus non-retail which named proplusww.

Method 2: Use the command-line interface

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt window.

    • Windows 10, Windows , or Windows 8

      1. Press Windows logo key+X on your keyboard to open the quick action menu.

View or change the Office or Outlook Product Key

I've got several licenses for Office and Outlook but I'm not sure which one which ones I've used and which ones are free.

How can I find out which license I've used for which computer and how can I change the key if needed?

Button Product Key Office While you could simply try one of your Product/License Keys and see if it gets accepted, it’s not a very sophisticated approach.

The proper method to determine or change the Product Key depends on your version of Office or Outlook. However, for either version there is no need to completely reinstall Office.

Note: Microsoft installations don’t require a license key as they activate automatically when you log on to Office with your Microsoft Account. The same applies to Office and Office licenses that are linked to your Microsoft Account.

Find license keys for Office , Office , Office and Office via a script

VBS Script buttonOffice and later include a vbs-script which will reveal the last 5 characters of your Product Key. It’s pretty safe to state that these 5 characters would already be more than enough to find out which Product Key you have used (as you should already have safely stored the full Product Key code somewhere else together with your other license information).

You can run the vbs-file in the following way;

  1. Open a command prompt. For instance via:
  2. In the command prompt, type the following:
    • Office / (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office / (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office / (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office (bit) on a bit version of Windows
    • Office (bit) on a bit version of Windows
  3. You should now get a screen with some license details such as the license name, type and the last 5 characters of the Product Key.

Use storycall.us to reveal your Office , , , or Product Key.
Office offers a scripted method to lookup your Product Key.

Changing the Product Key for Office / / /

Change License Key buttonChanging the Product Key for msi-based installations of Office can be done directly from the Control Panel/Apps & Features or via a command line.

Product Keys for Click-to-Run based installations of Office can only be modified via the command line.

  • Windows 10
    Start-> Settings-> Apps
  • Windows 7 and Windows 8
    Start-> Control Panel-> Uninstall a Program

Here, locate your Office application and press Modify or Change. Setup will now start with the option “Enter a Product Key” which allows you to enter a different product key.

When you are using a Click-to-Run based installation of Office or want to change the Product Key via a command line, you can use the same storycall.us script as mentioned before.

Step 1: Add the new key
Instead of using the switch, you must use the switch, where you should replace for your Product Key.

Step 2: Remove the old key
To remove the previous key, you must use the switch, where you should replace for the last 5 character of the installed product key as reported with .

Changing the Product Key for Office XP/ / /

Office buttonChanging the Product Key for Office or previous requires you to go into the Registry.

  1. Browse to the following key:
  2. Now is a good point to make a backup of that key;
Right click on the key, choose Export… and save the file to for instance your Desktop.
  3. Expand the Registration key in the Registry and you’ll see one or more sub keys which contain a lot of characters between curly brackets: { and }
Each sub key stands for an installed Office application.
The proper name for this identifier string is called a “GUID”.
  4. Click on the sub key to reveal its contents in the right pane.
The key will reveal the name of the package that you have installed. If you have multiple GUID sub keys listed, you can use this key name to determine for which installation you’ll be changing the Product Key.
  5. In the pane on the right, delete the following keys:
    • Close the Registry and start Outlook (or any other Office application); you’ll now be prompted to fill in your Product Key and activate Office again.

Delete the DigitalProductID and ProductID key to reset your Product Key
Delete the DigitalProductID and ProductID key to reset your Product Key.

Determine the Product Key with a 3rd party tool

Tools buttonDetermining the used Product Key when using Office or previous isn’t directly supported by Microsoft. However, you can use a little program called Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder to find out your used Product Key. Simply install and run the application to find out the Product Key (note: during the installation, there will be a prompt to also install a sponsored application which you can choose not to install).

Another free application which you can use is Belarc Advisor. This application does a bit more thorough scan of your computer for which it generates a report that also includes license keys for several of your installed applications. If you are in a large corporate network, you might want to disconnect your network connection as it will also try to build a network map which may cause the application to appear to hang at the “checking the local network of this computer” stage.

    How to Activate Office ?

    Источник: [storycall.us]

    Deploy Office (for IT Pros)

To configure and perform deployments of volume licensed versions of Officeincluding Project and Visio, for users in your organization, you use the Office Deployment Tool (ODT).

For example, you would create a storycall.us Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives to download and install the bit version of Office Professional Plus in English and a different storycall.us file to install the bit version of Visio Professional in French.

    For example, the bit version.
OfficeClientEditionValid xml values are "32" and ""

All Office products on the computer must be of the same architecture. You can’t have both bit and bit Office products installed on the same computer.

We recommend Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives on computers that have 4 gb or more of memory.

    <ExcludeApp ID="Publisher" />

If you’re using this storycall.us to install Office Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, previous Windows Installer (MSI) versions of Office are removed as part of the installation process.

    • Keep some Office products Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives uninstall all other Office products on the computer.

RemoveMSI can be used to uninstall, or versions of Office, Visio, or Project that were installed using Windows Installer (MSI).

It will look as if nothing is happening, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, but the download is happening in the background. Once the download is complete, you are returned to a command prompt.

If you want to check that the files are downloading, go to the location you specified for your SourcePath in the storycall.us file. You should see a folder named “Office” with a subfolder named “Data.” There will also be a folder named with the version number of the download. For example, Which files you see and the names of the Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives depend on whether you are downloading the bit or bit version of Office and which languages you are downloading.

Here Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives additional details about downloading Office installation files:

    • You must download the bit and bit versions separately.
    • All volume licensed versions of Office – such as Office Professional PlusVisio Professionaland Project Professional – are included in the same download, regardless of which products you specify in the storycall.us file. This helps you save disk space on your local network. The core files for the Office products are in the storycall.us or storycall.us file, depending if it’s the Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives or bit version of Office.

Install Office by using the Office Deployment Tool

Once you have a copy of the ODT Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives have created your storycall.us file (and downloaded the Office installation files to your local network, if necessary), you can install Office To do that, open an elevated command prompt, go to the folder where you saved the ODT and the storycall.us file, and type the following command:

If you have saved the storycall.us file with a different name, use that name in the command.

Once the installation is complete, you are returned to a command prompt and you can go open Office programs you’ve installed.

Install Office by using Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager

You can also use Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager to deploy volume licensed versions of Office Configuration Manager (current branch) has a wizard that steps you through the process and builds the storycall.us file for you. Earlier versions of Configuration Manager require you to download the ODT and create your own storycall.us file.

    • Configuration Manager (current branch): If you’re using Configuration Manager (current branch), you can use the Office Client Installation wizard to deploy Office You must be using at least versionbut version is recommended.

You can use the ODT and the storycall.us file to install volume licensed versions of Officeincluding Project and Visio, in multiple languages. For more details, see Language element.

You can also just install proofing tools by specifying the Product ID as "ProofingTools" in your storycall.us file along with the appropriate Language IDs. Proofing tools packages, which are a new capability for Officeare much smaller than full language packs. Consider deploying proofing tools in cases where users work with documents in multiple languages but don’t need the Office product UI in all those languages. The proofing tools can be installed at the same time you’re installing Officeor you can install them later.

Overview of Office (for IT Pros)

    • 4 minutes to read

Office is a version of Microsoft's productivity software that's available as a one-time purchase from a retail store or through a volume licensing agreement.

    Important

Office is separate from Office that's available through Office (or Microsoft ) plans. For Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, if you've deployed Microsoft Apps for enterprise (previously named Office ProPlus) to the users in your organization, you don't need Office You already have all the features, and many more, that are included in Office

Volume licensed versions of Office are available for enterprise admins to download and deploy to the users in their organization. The following Office products are available for devices running Windows:

    • Office Professional Plus
    • Office Standard
    • Project Professional
    • Project Standard
    • Visio Professional
    • Visio Standard

These Office products now use Click-to-Run, instead of Windows Installer (MSI), Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, as the installation technology. But, how you Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives these Office products – for example, by using Key Management Service (KMS) – remains the same.

For devices running macOS, Office Standard for Mac is available for volume licensed customers. For more information, see Deployment guide for Office for Mac.

    What's changed in Office ?

The biggest change since Office is that the installation technology used by the new volume licensed versions of Office is Click-to-Run, instead of Windows Installer (MSI). Click-to-Run has been the installation technology for most Office products since the release of Office

In addition to Click-to-Run, the following are some other changes that you need to be aware of:

    • Office is supported on Windows 11 and Windows 10, but isn’t supported on Windows 7 or Windows For more information, review the system requirements.
    • To configure and perform installations, you use the Office Deployment Tool, which is a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. The Office Customization Tool that you previously used for Windows Installer (MSI) is no longer used.
    • Instead of downloading the installation files from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC), you use the Office Deployment Tool to download the installation files directly from the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN) on the internet.
    • When you install Office Professional Plusall apps are installed by default. But, you can configure the Office Deployment Tool to exclude certain apps from being installed.
    • Office is installed on the system drive, which is usually the C:\ drive. The installation location can’t be changed.
    • You can configure updates to Officesuch as security updates and bug fixes, to be automatically downloaded and installed from the Office CDN. Individual downloads for each security update or bug fix aren’t available.

What's stayed the same in Office ?

Even though there is a different installation technology, you can still use the same software distribution tools, such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, that you currently use to deploy Office. Also, how you activate volume licensed versions of Office – for example, by using Key Management Service (KMS) – remains the same.

The major version of Office is staying atso some additional things are staying the same if you're upgrading from Officeincluding the following:

    • Existing Group Policy settings will continue to work, because the registry location for those settings will still be located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\ and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\
    • Other registry locations and settings information that reference will still Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives and other extensibility solutions that are compatible with Office will most likely be compatible with Office or will require only minimal testing.

What are the new features in Office ?

For information about the new features in Officesee the “what’s new” articles for Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, and Word. Office includes some, but not all, features that are available in versions of Office that come with an Office (or Microsoft ) plan.

Office won’t receive additional new features now that it has been released. If you want to get new Office features on an on-going basis, you should consider moving to an Office plan (or Microsoft ) plan that includes Office. Most of these enterprise plans include Microsoft Apps for enterprise (previously named Office ProPlus), which includes the same Office apps as Office Professional Plus For more information about available plans, see Office plans for enterprises and Microsoft plans for enterprises. For more information about new features, see What’s new in Microsoft

How do I upgrade to Office ?

We recommend that you uninstall existing versions of Office before you deploy Office If you’re uninstalling previous versions of Office products that were installed with Windows Installer (MSI), the Office Deployment Tool can remove most of those products for you as part of the installation of Office For more information, see Remove existing versions of Office before installing Office

    Additional information

    • Office Professional Plus includes Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word, and Skype for Business.
    • Access and Publisher aren't available for devices running macOS.
    • There isn’t a new version of OneNote, but a version of OneNote is installed with Office For more information, see Deployment guide for OneNote.
    • All products in the Office are available in both bit and bit versions. We recommend bit on computers that have 4 GB or more of memory. But you should assess application compatibility and other factors that might require you to use the bit version. For more information, see Choose between the bit or bit version of Office.
    • After downloading the installation files, internet access isn’t required to install, activate, or use Office
    • There isn’t a version of SharePoint Designer or InfoPath, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives. The last version for both products is
    • Volume licensed versions of Office aren't supported on Windows 10 in S mode or when using Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC).

Microsoft Office, or simply Office, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives a family of client software, server software, and services developed by Microsoft. It was first announced by Bill Gates on August 1,at COMDEX in Las Vegas. Initially a marketing term for an office suite (bundled set of productivity applications), the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Over the years, Office applications have grown substantially closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, OLE data integration and Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications brand. On July 10,Softpedia reported that Office was being used by over a billion people worldwide.[11]

Office is produced in several versions targeted towards different end-users and computing environments. The original, and most widely used version, is the desktop version, available for PCs running the Windows and macOSoperating systems, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives. Microsoft also maintains mobile apps for Android and iOS. Office on the web is a version of the software that runs within a web browser.

Since OfficeMicrosoft has promoted Office as the primary means of obtaining Microsoft Office: it allows the use of the software and other services on a subscription business model, and users receive feature updates to the software for the lifetime of the subscription, including new features and cloud computing integration that are not necessarily included in the "on-premises" releases of Office sold under conventional license terms. Inrevenue from Office overtook conventional license sales. Microsoft also rebranded most of their standard Office editions into Microsoft to emphasize their current inclusion of products and services.

The current on-premises, desktop version of Office is Officereleased on October 5, [12]

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the web can all natively open, edit, and save Office Open XML files (docx, xlsx, pptx) as well as OpenDocument files (odt, ods, odp), Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives. They can also open the older Office file formats (doc, xls, ppt), but will be converted to the newer Open XML formats if the user wishes to edit them Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives. Other formats cannot be opened in the browser apps, such as CSV in Excel or HTML in Word, nor can Office files that are encrypted with a password be opened. Files with macros can be opened in the browser apps, but the macros cannot be accessed or executed.[19][20][21] Starting in JulyWord can render PDF documents or convert them to Microsoft Word documents, although the formatting of the document may deviate from the original.[22] Since Novemberthe apps have supported real-time co-authoring and autosaving files.[23][24]

There are free extensions available to use Office on the web directly in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.[34][35]

    Common features

Most versions of Microsoft Office (including Office 97 and later) use their own widget set and do not exactly match the native operating system. This is most apparent in Microsoft Office XP andwhere the standard menus were replaced with a colored, flat-looking, shadowed menu style. The user interface of a particular version of Microsoft Office often heavily influences a subsequent version of Microsoft Windows. For example, the toolbar, colored buttons and the gray-colored 3D look of Office were added to Windows 95, and the ribbon, introduced in Officehas been incorporated into several programs bundled with Windows 7 and later. InOffice replicated the flat, box-like design of Windows 8.

Users of Microsoft Office may access external data via connection-specifications saved in Office Data Connection (.odc) files.[36]

Both Windows and Office use service packs to update software. Office Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives non-cumulative service releases, which were discontinued after Office Service Release 1.

Past versions of Office often contained Easter eggs. For example, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, Excel 97 contained a reasonably functional flight-simulator.

    File formats and metadata

Microsoft Office prior to Office used proprietary file formats based on the OLE Compound File Binary Format.[37] This forced users who share data to adopt the same software platform.[38] InMicrosoft made the entire documentation for the binary Office formats freely available for download and granted any possible patents rights for use or implementations of those binary format for free under the Open Specification Promise.[39][40] Previously, Microsoft had supplied such documentation freely but only on request.[41]

Starting with Officethe default file format has been a version of Office Open XML, though different from the one standardized and published by Ecma International and by ISO/IEC. Microsoft has granted patent rights to the formats technology under the Open Specification Promise[42] and has made available free downloadable converters for previous versions of Microsoft Office including OfficeMicrosoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, Office XP, Office [43] and Office for Mac OS X. Third-party implementations of Office Open XML exist on the Windows platform (LibreOffice, all platforms), macOS platform (iWork '08, NeoOffice, LibreOffice) and Linux (LibreOffice and storycall.us ). In addition, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, OfficeService Pack 2 for Officeand Office for Mac supports the OpenDocument Format (ODF) for opening and saving documents – only the old ODF ( ISO/IEC standard) is supported, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, not the version ( ISO/IEC standard).

Microsoft provides the ability to remove metadata from Office documents, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives. This was in response to highly publicized incidents where sensitive data about a document was leaked via its metadata.[44] Metadata removal was first available inwhen Microsoft released a tool called Remove Hidden Data Add-in for Office /XP for this purpose.[45] It was directly integrated into Office in a feature called the Document Inspector.

    Extensibility

A major feature of the Office suite is the ability for users and third-party Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives to write add-ins (plug-ins) that extend the capabilities of an application by adding custom commands and specialized features. One of the new features is the Office Store.[46]Plugins and other tools can be downloaded by users.[47] Developers can make money by selling their applications in the Office Store. The revenue is divided between the developer and Microsoft where the developer gets 80% of the money.[48] Developers are able to share applications with all Office users.[48]

The app travels with the document, and it is for the developer to decide what the recipient will see when they open it. The recipient will either have the option to download the app from the Office Store for free, start a free trial or be directed to payment.[48] With Office's cloud abilities, IT department can create a set of apps for their business employees in order to increase their productivity.[49] When employees go to the Office Store, they'll see their company's apps under My Organization. The apps that employees have personally downloaded will appear under My Apps.[48] Developers can use web technologies like HTML5, XML, CSS3, JavaScript, and APIs for building the apps.[50] An application for Office is a webpage that is hosted inside an Office client application. User can use apps to amplify the functionality of a document, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, email message, meeting request, or appointment. Apps can run in multiple environments and by multiple clients, including rich Office desktop clients, Office Web Apps, mobile browsers, and also on-premises and in the cloud.[50] The type of add-ins supported differ by Office versions:

    Password protection

Main article: Microsoft Office password protection

Microsoft Office has a security feature that allows users to encrypt Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Skype Business) documents with a user-provided password, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives. The password can contain up to characters and uses AES bit advanced encryption by default.[54] Passwords can also be used to restrict modification of the entire document, worksheet or presentation. Due to lack of document encryption, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, though, these passwords can be removed using a third-party cracking software.[55]

    Support policies

    Approach

All versions of Microsoft Office products before Microsoft Office are eligible for ten years of support following their release, during which Microsoft releases security updates for the product version and provides paid technical support. The ten-year period is divided into two five-year phases: The mainstream phase and the extended phase. During the mainstream phase, Microsoft may provide limited complimentary technical support and release non-security updates or change the design of the product. During the extended phase, said services stop.[56] Office only receives 5 years of mainstream and 2 years of extended support.[57]

Visual Basic for Applications support was dropped in Microsoft Office for Mac,[58] then reintroduced in Office for Mac [59]

Microsoft tried in the mids to port Office to RISC processors such as NEC/MIPS and IBM/PowerPC, but they met problems such as memory access being hampered by data structure alignment requirements. Microsoft Word 97 and Excel 97, however, did ship for the DEC Alpha platform. Difficulties in porting Office may have been a factor in discontinuing Windows NT on non-Intel platforms.[60]

    Pricing model and editions

The Microsoft Office applications and suites are sold via retail channels, and volume licensing for larger organizations (also including the "Home Use Program". allowing users at participating organizations to buy low-cost licenses for use on their personal devices as part of their employer's volume license agreement).[61]

InMicrosoft introduced a software as a service platform known as Officeto provide cloud-hosted versions of Office's server software, including Exchange e-mail and SharePoint, on a subscription basis (competing in particular with Google Apps).[62][63] Following the release of OfficeMicrosoft began to offer Office plans for the consumer market, with access to Microsoft Office software on multiple devices with free feature updates over the life of the subscription, as well as other services such as OneDrive storage.[64][65]

Microsoft has since promoted Office as the primary means of purchasing Microsoft Office. Although there are still "on-premises" releases roughly every three years, Microsoft marketing emphasizes that they do not receive new features or access to new cloud-based services as they are released unlike Officeas well as other benefits for consumer and business markets.[66][67][68] Office revenue overtook traditional license sales for Office in [69]

    Criticism

    Data formats

Microsoft Office has been criticized in the past for using proprietary file formats rather than open standards, Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives, which forces users who share data into adopting the same software platform.[73] However, on February 15,Microsoft made the entire documentation for the binary Office formats freely available under the Open Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives Promise.[74] Also, Office Open XML, the document format for the latest versions of Office for Windows and Mac, has been standardized under both Ecma International and ISO. Ecma International has published the Office Open XML specification free of copyrights and Microsoft has granted patent rights to the formats technology under the Open Specification Promise[75] and has made available free downloadable converters for previous Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives of Microsoft Office including OfficeOffice XP, Office and Office for the Mac. Third-party implementations of Office Open XML exist on the Mac platform (iWork 08) and Linux (storycall.us – Novell Edition only).

    Unicode and bi-directional texts

Another point of criticism Microsoft Office has faced was the lack of support in its Mac versions for Unicode and Bi-directional text languages, notably Arabic and Hebrew. This issue, which had existed since the first release inwas addressed in the version.[76][77]

    Privacy

On November 13,a report initiated by the Government of the Netherlands concluded that Microsoft Office and Office do not comply with GDPR, the European law which regulates data protection and privacy for all citizens in and outside the EU and EFTA region.[78] The investigation was initiated by the observation that Microsoft does not reveal or share publicly any data collected about users of its software. In addition, the company does not provide users of its (Office) software an option to turn off diagnostic and telemetry data sent back to the company. Researchers found that most of the data that the Microsoft software collects and "sends home" is diagnostics. Researchers also observed that Microsoft "seemingly tried to make the system GDPR compliant by Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives Office documents on servers based in the EU". However, they discovered the software packages collected additional data that contained private user information, some of which was stored on servers located in the US.[79] The Netherlands Ministry of Justice hired Privacy Company to probe and evaluate the use of Microsoft Office products in the public sector.[80] "Microsoft systematically collects data on a large scale about the individual use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Covertly, without informing people", researchers of the Privacy Company stated in their blog post. "Microsoft does not offer any choice with regard to the amount of data, or possibility to switch off the collection, or ability to see what data are collected, because the data stream Microsoft Office 2019 Product Code Archives encoded."[81]

The researchers commented that there is no need for Microsoft to store information such as IPs and email addresses, which are collected automatically by the software. "Microsoft should not store these transient, functional data, unless the retention is strictly necessary, for example, for security purposes", the researchers conclude in the final report by the Netherlands Ministry of Justice.[82]

As a result of this in-depth study and its conclusions, the Netherlands regulatory body concluded that Microsoft has violated GDPR "on many counts" including "lack of transparency and purpose limitation, and the lack of a legal ground for the processing."[83] Microsoft has provided the Dutch authorities with an "improvement plan" that should satisfy Dutch regulators that it "would end all violations". The Dutch regulatory body is monitoring the situation and states that "If progress is deemed insufficient or if the improvements offered are unsatisfactory, SLM Microsoft Rijk will reconsider its position and may ask the Data Protection Authority to carry out a prior consultation and to impose enforcement measures."[84] When asked for a response by an IT professional publication, a Microsoft spokesperson stated: We are committed to our customers’ privacy, putting them in control of their data and ensuring that Office ProPlus and other Microsoft products and services comply with GDPR and other applicable laws. We appreciate the opportunity to discuss our diagnostic data handling practices in Office ProPlus with the Dutch Ministry of Justice and look forward to a successful resolution of any concerns."[80] The user privacy data issue affects ProPlus subscriptions of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Officeincluding the online version of Microsoft Office [85]
