X-Plane 11 is the 2018 sequel to 2012’s popular X-Plane 10 and is a competing product to Microsoft's Flight Simulator in the consumer market. Those who want more detail and immersion can choose between a multitude of high-quality payware aircraft and extremely detailed airports. Alternatively, there are a considerable number of freely available airport layouts online to install to add some life to the places from which you take off and land.

As a highly detailed open-world flight simulator, the plane models, environment, and objects place a significant toll on systems. The highly advanced physics engine that accurately simulates factors such as airflow based off of the angles, lines, and engineering data of the plane models also places a heavy strain on the system. X-Plane is a good game for benchmarking because of a multitude of options for increasing visual detail, shadow quality, object count, and view distance which mean that the game scales well over a range of hardware (although graphics options have been simplified in the newest version). Since then we've been busy benchmarking with 23 different graphics cards of AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce line-ups while running Ubuntu Linux and comparing the OpenGL vs. Vulkan rendering performance for this realistic flight simulator.

Ubuntu 20.04 in its near final state was used while for the Radeon graphics the default Linux 5.4 kernel was used paired with Mesa 20.1-devel from the Oibaf PPA. With this Radeon RADV Vulkan driver testing, worth noting is that RADV+ACO was used. The ACO compiler back-end yielded dramatically lower load times compared to the default AMDGPU LLVM code-path... The difference was incredible otherwise X-Plane 11.50 beta was loading very slow with RADV. On the NVIDIA side was the 440.64 driver. The cards tested included:

With Mesa 20.1-devel RADV+ACO and NVIDIA 440.64, no issues were encountered during our X-Plane benchmarking.

I ran the X-Plane 11.50 beta benchmarks with OpenGL and Vulkan on all of the tested cards at 1080p, 1440, and 4K while using a variety of graphical pre-sets. All benchmarks were carried out via the Phoronix Test Suite.

Hardware In the Loop (HIL) simulation is one of the most useful tools you can find in the early stages of the integration of an autopilot into a platform, especially for the development of the control loops and gains. HIL simulation will allow you to start tuning your gains in a safe environment.

Veronte Autopilot is able to work along with XPlane 11, one of the better-known flight simulators in the market, to make this possible.

UAV model creation

First, you will need to create a model of your platform. Create your model as accurate as possible: dimensions, location of the engines, location of the center of mass, etc. Even though knowing your aerodynamic coefficients will improve your model, they are not needed! Xplane will calculate an approximation for you, using the physical and dimensional information you provided.

HIL with Veronte

Once this is done, you are ready to start your HIL simulation. Plug your Veronte Autopilot to your PC using the USB and enable the communication with XPlane. Once configured, Veronte will receive all the relevant information from the simulator (attitude, location, speed…) and send the corresponding commands to control the actuators, engines and control surfaces in the simulation. Tune all your loops and parameters within the simulation, and get your model to fly meeting your requirements. Veronte autopilot will not be able to tell the difference and will react as if it was a real flight.

Once your simulation model is fully operational, you are ready for the next step. Even though the Xplane model is not exact, the approximation will be good enough for your platform to fly. Some more time fine tuning your control parameters will be all that you need to get your platform ready for operation.

The utilities of HIL simulation do not stop here. Plan full missions, check your stick controls, simulate failures and test that failsafe procedures are correctly implemented…and all of this just with a PC and your Veronte Autopilot. The amount of time and resources that HIL simulation can save will make a really big difference for the development of your platform.
