How to fix the Halo Infinite multiplayer beta's annoying blue screen error

Halo Infinite is out now! Well, at least the free-to-play multiplayer component has launched in its beta form. Xbox Game Studios and Industries shadow-dropped Halo Infinite’s multiplayer beta at the end of a livestream celebrating Xbox and Halo’s 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, it didn’t go smoothly. After the announcement, some of the first people to install Halo Infinite ran into an issue where the game doesn’t start, and a blue screen is shown instead. Thankfully, the solution to this issue is pretty simple.

What is the Halo Infinite multiplayer blue screen error?

If you installed Halo Infinite on the Microsoft Store immediately after the beta release announcement, you might have had a tiny and quick download that allowed you to almost instantly access the game. You were most likely greeted by a blue screen instead of a title screen when you booted the game up. It looks like this:

What’s causing this issue — According to Microsoft, this blue screen was showing up because the Halo Infinite multiplayer beta was not fully rolled out on the Microsoft Store when gamers started to download the game.

“Please be patient, Spartans!” a tweet from the official Halo Support account said. “We're aware of an issue where players are hitting a blue screen upon trying to launch #HaloInfinite. Beta build is working through our systems and should hit your console as an update shortly. We're working as hard as we can to get you in the game.”

How to fix the Halo Infinite multiplayer blue screen error

Thankfully, the developers have already resolved this issue. As of p.m. Eastern on November 15, the Halo Support account says the issue is resolved. If you haven’t installed the game yet, you won’t run into any problems while downloading and booting up the game.

For those who’ve already installed Halo Infinite, the process to fix the blue screen error is straightforward. Press the options button on your Xbox controller over Halo Infinite and go to the “Manage Games and Add-Ons” menu. From there, you can view available updates. If one is available for Halo Infinite, install the update, which may be around 30 GB, give or take.

Once that’s fully installed, boot up Halo Infinite, and it should work correctly. If you’re still running into a blue screen, the Halo Support account recommends you restart your Xbox console or PC. If you’re somehow still running issues after that, you can file a support ticket on Halo’s website.

While this blue screen issue was a very short-term problem, it made the launch of Halo Infinite’s multiplayer beta hectic and chaotic rather than celebratory. Thankfully, new players should no longer run into this issue and can hop in and start enjoying the game.

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer beta is available for free on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

Ahead of Halo Infinite's release in December, developer Industries is reminding players to consider installing the Halo Waypoint mobile app to stay plugged in.

The Halo Waypoint app received an update in October that gave it a makeover in time for Halo Infinite's release. The app, which is free and available for iOS and Android, will allow players to track their Halo Infinite statistics and customize their characters when the game launches.

For now, the app can be used to read up on the latest Halo news and take a look at player stats for Halo 5: Guardians and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Like the newly updated Halo Waypoint website, the app shows things like how many games you've played, your win/loss record, your kill/death ratio, and your highest rank, among other things.

The app also tracks progression for Halo: MCC's seasonal rewards, so you can find out how close you may be to unlocking a new cosmetic item.

You can follow the links below to start your download now, or navigate to the store on your phone.

Halo Infinite releases on December 8 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X

Games go through immense stages of quality assurance before their release period. No matter how many bugs the dev teams squash during this time, more always show up when players flood into the servers.

The developers rolled out Halo Infinite&#;s multiplayer mode yesterday ahead of schedule, and fans around the world started flooding into the game’s servers without wasting a second.

While some players will be able to play matches without any trouble, others run into errors that prevent them from playing Halo Infinite. The Incompatible Operating System error is a great example of this, and it’s been making fans’ lives difficult.

The error explains itself, but it makes no sense if players are trying to launch the game on a Windows machine that has capable hardware. An ultimate fix for this error should roll out in the future as developers get to the bottom of it, but there are a few troubleshooting methods that players can try in the meantime.

Verify the integrity of your game files

A corrupted in-game file or a missing one can cause the Incompatible Operating System error. Corrupted game files can appear for all sorts of reasons and you can scan for them via Steam.

  • Launch Steam
  • Find Halo Infinite in your library
  • Right-click on Halo Infinite and choose &#;Properties&#;
  • Click on &#;Local Files&#;
  • Select &#;Verify&#; the integrity of game files

The verification process will kick off after completing the last step and if the scanner detects a corrupted file, it’ll replace it with a new copy.

This process can take a few minutes and you can complete other tasks while it sorts itself out.

Restart your PC

Gamers can have all kinds of programs on their computers. Though that won’t be a problem in most cases, most modern apps will leave an active background process even after they’re closed.

When there are too many background processes running on your PC, there can be a conflict with the game you’re playing, Halo Infinite in this case, and cause you to receive errors that prevent you from launching the game.

Restarting your PC will allow you to get rid of all the background processes that may have stacked over time. Right after you start your PC again, try launching Halo Infinite before anything else to see if the error is gone.

Keep your drivers updated

Game developers work closely with graphics card manufacturers. Some even release special driver updates alongside game releases that unlock additional features and fix some bugs.

If it’s been a while since your last driver update, you should try updating your drivers. A conflict between your GPU and Halo Infinite can also cause the Incompatible Operating System error.

Both Nvidia and AMD have their own dedicated programs that automatically install updates, but if you don’t have those installed, you’ll need to navigate to their respective websites and manually pick your drivers to download the latest updates for them.

Uninstall your Visual C++ packages

Though this is more of a niche fix, installing the latest Visual C++ packages can be the difference-maker in rare cases. Before you uninstall new ones, you’ll need to delete your existing ones through the uninstall or remove apps section on the Control Panel.

You can download the latest packages here.

Disable your antivirus or firewall

Antivirus and firewalls want the best for the users. They can sometimes get in the way of games though, especially when they detect false positives while a game’s trying to install its files. This may have happened without you noticing, and if you disable your antivirus/firewall, Halo Infinite will be able to install the remaining files or let you in without receiving the Incompatible Operating System error.

If you’d like to keep your antivirus/firewall on, you’ll need to set Halo Infinite and its game files as an exception. This process will depend on the antivirus program you’re using and you can find online guides for almost all developers out there.

Reinstall Halo Infinite

No gamer likes to hear this due to the file sizes of modern games, but reinstalling a game is the only last-resort solution you’ll have to fix the Incompatible Operating System error.

When you reinstall the game, you’ll be basically making sure that all of your files are in top shape. If you have a second storage drive on your computer, you can try installing Halo Infinite there for a chance just to check a couple of boxes in one go.

If you’re still receiving the Incompatible Operating System error while trying to play Halo Infinite after trying out all the fixes above, you should send a support ticket through Halo Waypoint. Explain all the troubleshooting steps you’ve tried so far and even include some screenshots to help the support team with getting to the bottom of the issue.

Depending on the time of the year, you should get a reply email from a support associate within a few days. By then, they may fix the problem if it’s due to something on their end or provide you with additional troubleshooting that are likely to fix the Incompatible Operating System error.

How to Fix Halo Infinite Not Downloading & Blue Screen

Halo Infinite&#;s Multiplayer is a complicated beast, and can be a little tricky to get up and running. Here&#;s how to get Halo Infinite to download properly.
halo infinite download not working

Halo Infinite's Multiplayer Beta has seen a surprise release a little less than a month before the game was set to launch in early December. This is all very exciting, but we do need to clarify one particular word: beta. The thing about Betas is that they are earlier versions of the full game. Now, whilst Halo Infinite's Multiplayer is insanely polished, that doesn't mean that there won't be a few problems.

The most important thing to do when you want to play a video game is to simply install the bloody thing. Thus, the biggest problem you can have is if it doesn't install, or perhaps, if you are having Halo Infinite's infamous blue screen bug. We're here to help you with that, here are a few tips to help you download the game and fix the blue screen bug.

Now, Halo Infinite can be unbelievably complicated to download. It is not just a matter of hitting "Download" on PC and waiting. There are a few tricks that can help you download the Multiplayer Beta with no worries in the world. Let's take you through it.

How to Fix Halo Infinite Not Downloading

If Halo Infinite is not working on the Microsoft Store or Game Pass, make sure to download the Multiplayer Beta on Steam. Honestly, after thirty minutes of struggling with the bloody game on the Microsoft Store, playing around with Game Pass, and rebooting about a dozen times, I managed to get the game working on Steam instantaneously. Seriously, Microsoft, what the fork is wrong with you? How is it that hard?

In addition, and if you are weirdly set on using the Microsoft Store, we recommend making sure that your console or PC has enough space on the hard-disk drive. If it does, you need to first delete the pre-downloaded files that would have been popped onto your system before you received the error message, restarting, and trying again. In addition, make sure that your system software is fully updated.

How to Fix the Blue Screen Bug in Halo Infinite

Reboot your Xbox or PC and then boot it up again from scratch. If you have additionally made sure that the console or PC has fully downloaded the game, this process will register that download as complete and will refresh your cache, fixing the problem. Often problems like these are caused by your computer or console simply getting confused by the data stored in the system, especially if the installation wasn't perfectly completed.

Thus, by restarting, you will force the system to sort the download and installation files correctly, and the game should launch absolutely fine after that. This all depends, though, on whether you have made sure that the game is correctly installed in the first place. As you saw earlier, this is especially fraught on PC, so be extra careful and - if you're smart - make sure to be playing the game using Steam. It's much easier. Honestly, the only reason to do differently is if you have Game Pass and you want to play the final game in December.

Halo Infinite

Going into the Xbox anniversary, many rumors circulated that Microsoft would surprise everyone by releasing Halo Infinite&#;s free multiplayer mode early, and that&#;s exactly what Microsoft did. The multiplayer beta is available now for Xbox and PC.

This was Microsoft&#;s worst kept secret, as almost everyone seems to have heard that company was going to launch the multiplayer portion of its next massive game on November 15, Forbes did an exhaustive dive into all of the evidence, and it was compelling. And, of course, it all turned out to be correct.

You can currently download the Halo Infinite multiplayer beta on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Series X, and PC. As mentioned, it&#;s completely free, and you don&#;t need to preorder the separate campaign mode to get access to the entirety of the multiplayer mode.

If you&#;re on Xbox, you can search for Halo Infinite or go to Microsoft&#;s website to start the download. For those looking to get the game on PC, you can go to the Steam page to download it.

However, if you&#;re trying to play on Xbox, you might have some issues. Many users (myself included) are getting a blue screen after downloading the game. That&#;s because it&#;s only downloading the small preload file, and it appears that the actual multiplayer game hasn&#;t fully launched yet.

Update, 11/15/21 pm Eastern: After deleting the small installed Halo Infinite File and downloading it again, I was able to install the full version of the multiplayer beta.

In a Tweet, Halo Support addressed the situation, saying, &#;We&#;re aware of an issue where players are hitting a blue screen upon trying to launch #HaloInfinite. Beta build is working through our systems and should hit your console as an update shortly.&#;

In the meantime, you&#;ll just need to be patient (or play it on PC, as players seem to be having better success there).

Autumn Archives

In just under two months, you'll have the chance to become the Master Chief, inspiring hope in humanity through heroism and sacrifice, no matter the cost. Step into Master Chief's shoes and become the hero of the journey as you face the Banished and travel across Zeta Halo when Halo Infinite launches on December 8. In honor of that, we wanted to share some artwork that evokes some of those sentiments. These make fantastic PC Wallpapers so be sure to download the zip file now! (Updated 10/25)

For those of you keeping count at home, that makes it under 60 days to launch – can you believe it? Before we get to that point, we have a ton of news to cover from MCC Season 8, to some Halo 5 updates, and more. We've captured all the latest in one spot so read on to get the latest from around the Halo community!

Before we get into the awesomesauce that is Mythic, I want to take a minute to give some appreciation to Pub Team. They have worked exceptionally hard to breathe new life into MCC and the amount of love and time they've poured into the game is immeasurable. I hope you join me in giving them a well deserved round of applause for the nonstop efforts they've put forth.

Season 8 is here and it does not disappoint. Mythical mod tools, amazing armors, hellaciously heroic head-gear, and more – there's something for everyone. We released some mod tools for Combat Evolved back in July and we're excited to put mod tools for Halo 2 (Classic only!) and Halo 3 in your hands. We've already seen some incredible innovations come through and I know that's only scratching the surface. We're very excited to see what you all come up with and our socks are ready to be blown off. You can read all about the update in our launch blog.

MCC Season 8 Mythic Spartans riding a mongoose through the desert

Arguably the fanciest feature taking center stage here are the new Mythical armor sets for Halo 3. Close second would be all the new additions to ODST Firefight! You can battle it out against Grunts only, deal death to Drones, or slaughter Sentinels to your heart's content. My personal favorite is the addition of Icebox (aka Turf! My favorite map ever!) to Halo 3

You can check out @Postums' latest Seasonal Sitrep to get the latest low-down on the update.

Six years ago (almost to the day!) Halo 5: Guardians debuted. Week after week, season after season, the teams have worked tirelessly to keep things moving like a well oiled machine. However, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and, as such, I'm here to talk to you about Halo 5's final playlist updates, which will happen after Halo Infinite launches later this year. While saying goodbye to our weekly playlist updates is certainly difficult, we feel we've hit a good balance for everyone who may want to play Halo 5 after Halo Infinite's release.

Our goal is to make sure that there's a variety, that the playlists remain healthy, and that you have the ability to complete your in-game Commendations. When we launch Halo Infinite later this year, these are the playlists you can expect to find in Halo 5:

Red Spartan firing the Blood of Suban

  • Quick Play
  • Super Fiesta Party
  • Big Team Battle
  • Big Team Super Fiesta
  • Infection

  • Slayer
  • Team Arena
  • 2v2 Competitive
  • SWAT
  • Elimination
  • Free-For-All

  • Warzone Firefight
  • Mythic Warzone Firefight
  • Warzone Warlords
  • Warzone (Warzone will be the primary default with Warzone Turbo and Warzone Assault added in at a lower weighting)

We will also be kicking off one final ranked Arena Season come December that will run indefinitely. We expect this to be the last playlist update for the forseeable future as our focus will primarily be on Halo Inifnite. That said, we will periodically re-evaluate the health of playlists to ensure we continue to have a good experience for players looking to play online.

As a reminder, Ranked Free-for-all is currently available for the rest of the month. Not to mention the treat that is Double XP in Infection all month long. And next week, we’ll be rotating in the fan-favorite Castle Wars and the bombastic Warzone Turbo for the weekend!

Energy drinks and gaming, name a better duo – I'll wait. Halo Infinite has taken center stage thanks to a prodigious partnership with Rockstar. Cortana-Inspired look from Mac and Halo's partnership

@MACcosmetics pulled out all the stops for this Cortana-inspired look. Make-up artist @marinaderosa_mua did a stellar job and seeing Halo in this sphere is one of my favorite things. The best part is that this is just the beginning so keep your eyes on the horizon for more to come from this partnership!

Just as MCC has kept rolling, so have all things Halo Infinite. The studio is all hands on deck and working hard as we prepare for December 8. Between running our second Technical Preview (over two weekends!), a new issue of Canon Fodder, the latest Inside Infinite, and some jaw-dropping concept art, we've had one of our busiest months thus far. Here's the "short" recap, just for you!

Halo Infinite has been built from the ground up to make the PC a first-class platform. Come December 8, you'll be able to experience a Halo free-to-play mutliplayer designed with PC (and console) in mind. You'll be able to choose your input for ranked matchmaking, have local LANs using your PC as a dedicated server host, experience multiplayer crossplay and cross-progression across Xbox and PC, and so much more. Get the scoop first-hand from our PC and Sandbox teams now:

We're extremely pleased to announce that AMD is the exclusive PC partner for Halo Infinite. Our teams have been working with the crew at AMD for over two years to make game title optimizations that benefit a vast range of hardware and device endpoints. You can catch the full rundown in the PC blog released yesterday.

AMD Radeon RX XT Halo Infinite Limited Edition graphics card

We have taken that mantra very much to heart as we work to make Halo Infinite accessible through numerous menu and gameplay options. You can catch our very own UXUI Producer Paige Johnson explaining her role in championing accessibility features for the game on the Xbox Accessibility Showcase. Some of the features include:

  • Subtitles options: Change font size, background opacity, and on by default
  • Text size adjustment
  • Menu narration
  • Color blind options via player outline colors
  • HUD opacity adjustments
  • And more!

Each month we manage to find time with some of the devs working on our new favorite Halo game and last month, was no different. We've talked with our Audio team, our Live team, and more. In September, we sat down with some of the people working on the game's multiplayer to pick their brains about all things Big Team Battle (BTB). The mode has long been a staple of the Halo experience and we wanted to find out the teams approach to designing the biggest and best BTB to-date. It's definitely worth reading so make sure you do that now – assuming you didn't already.

Flighting is tricky and complicated. And sometimes, mistakes happen. In this particular instance, we inadvertently left some concept art files in the Tech Preview build. Our error is your gain as we decided to face the issue as open and honestly as we could. We opted to package up the collection in downloadable zip files and shared some of the art of Halo Infinite with you directly.

Concept artwork for Halo Infinite's Campaign

Some of the images will look familiar as we've used them previously but that aside, we want to be clear that none of these images spoil any part of the campaign you will get to dive into in December. You will be able to get some of these images in a beautiful book by our friends @DarkHorseComics. While you wait, you can grab the full set we released in both 4K and HD zip files in the blog. We hope you enjoy them as they are simply stunning works and make for incredible desktop wallpapers.

Halo-ween and Inktober are some of my favorite things so let's check out some of the awesome art that comes from those!

For those that have stuck with me this far, thank you! There's a lot of info and a lot of excitement and we're all very much looking forward to December 8. For those of you who had artwork featured, don't forget to fill out the latest form so we can hook you up with your Fire Unicorn rewards. 🦄🔥

Stay tuned for more between now and launch. It'll be here before you know it!
